Scientist – Analytical

 

This position is responsible for generating analytical data in support of Bostik’s R&D programs, technical service, manufacturing, and health and environmental safety efforts for the Americas region. The data is generated, analyzed, and reported to internal customers. This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of analytical tools and methods in a dynamic laboratory environment shared with other team members. Work is to be performed in accordance with safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Bostik’s safety initiatives and programs.

  • Can effectively engage business and technical resources to interpret, solve, and communicate complex technical problems by leveraging analytical capabilities.
  • Can independently balance time on supporting immediate versus longer term projects, continuously seeks opportunities to refine and grow current skills, and can provide technical mentorship to R&D Analytical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Fully participate in Bostik departmental and site-wide safety programs and ensures safe laboratory operation.
  • Aligned to Bostik business needs, can develop, perform, and document analytical characterization methods.
  • Prepare and analyze samples by a variety of techniques including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microscopy, chromatography (GPC, GCMS), etc.
  • Write detailed technical reports and make presentations to communicate results to multiple levels within the company.
  • Develop, execute, and document calibration and verification procedures.
  • Supports instrument maintenance and repair of analytical equipment through hands-on troubleshooting and/or coordinating with equipment vendors.
  • Contribute to the innovation culture at Bostik by exhibiting curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration with others to constantly improve our methods and products.

Requirements

  • Minimum PhD in Chemistry with 0-5 years experience OR a Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with 5-10 years of industrial experience.
  • Analytical expertise in using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microscopy, and/or chromatography (GPC, GCMS) for polymer characterization.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and work with hazardous materials, and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to deliver results independently, and a proven ability to collaborate is critical.
  • Experience with method development and various sample preparation techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair instrumentation as needed.
