JOB SUMMARY

  • Position reports directly to the Clear Lake Technical Manager and provides technical assistance for plant operations.  Position requires direct interaction with other departmental managers, staff positions and the R&D organization to exchange information and ideas directly related to the success of the plant and the Acrylics business unit. 
  • Position has no direct reports nor a designated backup in the organization.
  • Position helps the technical manager support the development of the engineers within the technical organization.

 

Job Dimensions

  • Production Data:  Understands and optimizes site systems such as reaction, distillation, incinerations, flares, utilities, tank farms, colling towers, etc. to improve health, safety, & environmental compliance, minimize operating cost, improve quality, and maximize raw material efficiencies.  Leads other high priority Variable Cost, Repetitive Production Expense or Operational Asset Utilization improvements projects across site.
  • People Data:  Responsible for the training of Operations personnel and other staff in technical issues and new projects.  Mentos developing engineers and/or staff engineers.  Completed Greenbelt Project Leader certification.
  • Financial Data:  Responsible for the financial evaluation of potential projects to improve raw material yields or reduce utility usage for the Clear Lake Plant.
  • Process Data:  Responsible for the interpretation of process information.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Environmental (10%): Support full environmental compliance and optimal environmental performance.  Ensures that permit compliance data and new permit applications are reviewed and are consistent with best engineering practices. Provide REED data from the units to the Senior Environmental Specialist to ensure REED data is accurately and appropriately into REED database.
  • Process Safety Goal (20%): Support full compliance of all Safety & Health related regulatory requirements including: OSHA, PSM, and Company Policies and standards.  Trained in root cause investigation techniques and leads investigations at the site.  Ensures a timely response or technical review is completed for incident investigations and that action items are developed and implemented (Impact).  Key member of PHA team for units in their area.  Strictly follow the MOC and Procedure Use policies.  Coach others as needed.  Lead by example and meet CLO Leadership Expectations.
  • Operation and Technical Goal (50%): Maximize operational efficiency and product quality by continuously identifying, evaluating and proposing ideas for improvement in all technical/ technology areas. Support Plant initiatives for new product development, Process Technology Projects, and debottlenecking efforts. Provide assistance to Operations during plant turnarounds, emergency operations, and any other time technical assistance is required.  Drive OAU goal, 85+% in a turnaround year/89+% in a non-turnaround year, through a disciplined reliability program.
  • Professional Development Goal (5%): Develop skills required to support the Clear Lake plant through professional development of technical skills, interpersonal relationship skills, management skills, and community relations. Ensure that specific goals are developed that correspond with Plant objectives and initiatives.
  • Major Capital Projects (15%): Assist the Project Process Engineer with major projects (>$2MM) at the Clear Lake site. Provide mass & utility balances for current major projects towards the 2030 Clear Lake Project goal. Work with the BU Senior Process Engineer on defining reactor modifications to move to recycle gas technology.

 

The position reports directly to the Technical Manager.  In addition, a “dotted line” accountability to the Operations Manager exists as the position supports not only near- and long-term improvement objectives but also the immediate need of the operating units.  The individual must develop a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of the Clear Lake Plant and of the business situation as related to the operation of the process.  Priorities will be driven by the yearly AI planning and project portfolio planning activities.  The individual must be able to communicate on multiple levels of organization and manage multiple tasks required by the Clear Lake Plant.

 

The individual must meet the following requirements:

  • Supports the site HES policies and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, Safe Start, etc.).
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident, or injury incidents.
  • Understands and Supports the Clear Lake Facility Acrylic Monomers HSE2Q Commitment.
  • Be able to pass a respirator fit test and wear an SCBA, full face and/or half face respirator.
  • Be able to climb stairs, ladder cages, etc. in order to enter distillation columns for internal inspection.
  • Be able to enter confined spaces.
  • Minimal travel potentially overseas is required.

 

Min Years of Experience

Five to ten years of experience with previous assignments in chemical process, manufacturing, or in production/start-up.  High capability to work within matrix organization.

Education and area of focus

 

Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university, minimum.

 

Certifications/Trainings:

  • Greenbelt certification preferred

 

Competencies -Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Good understanding of manufacturing process and engineering. Independently identifies bottlenecks and opportunities in the process.
  • Good understanding of technology for assigned processes.  Achieves competency with many methods and tools.
  • Recognized technology or engineering leader. Provides cross business unit/departmental engineering support.
  • Aspen Plus, Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating, etc. or equivalent is a benefit.
  • Process Hazard Analysis training thru Primatech or equivalent is a benefit.
  • Cause Mapping or Equivalent Root Cause Investigation training/experience is a benefit.
  • Efficient use of six sigma tools in the normal work process and develops project opportunities based on data analysis. Coaches less experienced engineers to use appropriate data analysis tools. 
  • Takes external training and learning.  Sets own career directions and customizes own development plan.
