Operations Technician

 

Situation in organization

Position reports directly to the Alsip Production Superintendent and Training Advisor.

 

Job dimensions

Operates assigned equipment or areas of the Plant and perform operations related activities to ensure safe and efficient operation of the facility. The Operations Technician Role is a member of a field-based team.  The job holder maintains operating equipment in the area of responsibility, and is responsible for process troubleshooting and minor maintenance activities. The job holder is a member of an empowered and flexible team working a twelve hour shift schedule.

Activities
  • Follow HES and Operating Discipline procedures and practices to ensure safe and efficient operation of assigned plant areas.
  • Operates and field checks process equipment. Monitor process conditions, equipment and control        systems.
  • Performs tasks assigned to operations (Raw material charges, equipment preparation, process samples, etc).
  • Ensures that operational activities and process performance are aligned with Plant and Business goals.
  • Perform in-depth troubleshooting of process equipment and systems to resolve process deviations and problems. Also completes minor repairs, improvements and preventive maintenance, as specified by the minor maintenance procedure.
  • Responsible for inputting RTPM codes into the control system in real time
  • Complete equipment isolation and decontamination, apply Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and author and authorize Safe Work Permits.
  • As required, participate in Root Cause Investigations.
  • Understands and executes Emergency Response procedures to mitigate unplanned events in the process.
  • Uses plant knowledge and skills to make improvements in plant performance
  • Help troubleshoot plant and customer problems.
  • Train peers in use of operating systems and procedures, and assists with procedure reviews if applicable.
  • Contribute to value creation by continuous improvement of procedures, the operations work processes and related tools and performance metrics.
  • Follow housekeeping and safety procedures to insure personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Maintain certifications
  • Attend daily meetings and provide routine communication to the production needs.  Follow up these communications in writing, telephone or e-mail as needed.
  • Routine use of a computer to communicate via e-mail, complete online training and other tasks as assigned. 
  • Work closely with control room operator to maintain operations.
  • Completes daily and weekend checklists (daily inventory).
  • Completes all assigned Impact items
  • Supports all AIMS initiatives
  • Comply with the HSEQ Policy.
  • Comply with Regulations, Legal and Internal Requirements as made known by the site and by the business unit (BU).
  • Comply with the rules of the specific location to which one is assigned as well as the rules set by the business unit (BU) and Arkema Inc.
  • Comply with all standard procedures and work instructions, aka SP, SOP, PWI, TM, to ensure productivity, quality assurance and cost effectiveness.
  • Review their work areas for potential losses and Report hazards to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Near Misses to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Incidents or Accidents to the direct supervisor.
  • Identify and communicate potential gains or possible improvements to the management system..
  • Ensures workplace safety by conducting safety observations and reviews while adhering to safety regulations and procedures.
  • Participate in HSEQ activities provided by the site management, Arkema Coating Resins and Arkema, Inc.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Context and environment

 

This position will be based in Alsip, Illinois.

 

Accountabilities

 

This role will: Operate the plant and process equipment in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to and contributing to the improvement of operating discipline. Accountable for the safe isolation, preparation, and permitting of maintenance activities in the process area. Accountable for equipment preventive maintenance and Operations Minor Maintenance activities.

 

Qualifications / experience required

  • HS Diploma/GED required
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment preferred
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at significant heights
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds; both to carry and to lift overhead.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces
  • Must be a highly motivated, team player and able to work independently.
