Lead Chemist SITUATION IN ORGANISATION (enclose a copy of your organisation chart)
Based in Wetherby, West Yorkshire, UK, the role is primarily office and laboratory-based reporting to the Global R&D Director for Photoinitiators and Cationic Resins (n+1). Working as part of the R&D Synthesis team for Photoinitiators and Cationic Resin at the Wetherby Photoinitiator Centre of Excellence and supervising the R&D Synthesis team(n-1).
JOB DIMENSIONS
The Lead Chemist is part of the EMEA R&D team based at Wetherby’s Photoinitiator Centre of Excellence.
Focused within photoinitiators and cationic resins, including new product development, design, preparation and scale up.
Responsibility within the Sartomer Global Innovation Team for global IP management, global regulatory and NPD activities with regards to the photoinitiators line of the business.


ACTIVITIES

Management
Planning and Executing projects within the R&D programme agreed with R&D Director, Product Manager and Market Manager.

Supervision of the R&D technicians, managing their workload, timelines and priorities within projects.

Planning and executing R&D NPD projects, developing actions and timelines, and reporting results in a timely manner. Progressing projects within the Gate system and maintaining the NPD tool and ELN.

IP
Preparation of experimental data and any other necessary supporting data for patent applications and journal submissions.

Assessment of freedom to operate and patentability for target products using patent and literature searching software such as Orbit and SciFinder.

NPD
Working with the market managers and R+D Director to understand NPD market requirements and priorities.

Designing projects to meet market requirements and lead NPD’s through the stage gate process and coordinating inputs from all functions.

Transfer from R&D to manufacturing operations, both internal and external, and provide technical support for manufacturing operations.

Reporting
Preparation for gate meetings to progress NPD projects.

Reporting PI and Cationic NPD updates to the Global Innovation team to enhane global understanding of the projects and avoid duplication of work.

Support the Graphic Arts department with the communication of European Monomer, Oligomer and PI GA projects to the Global Graphic Arts team.

Facilitate smooth management of Photoinitiator and Cationic Resin intellectual property vs competition through regular communication with R&D director, patent attorneys and the global R&D team.

Health and Safety
Maintain COSHH and other HSE required documentation and records.

Keep up-to-date with health and safety issues in all aspects of work undertaken.

Undertake behaviour based safety exercises and any other workplace HSE activities.

Update colleagues and managers in weekly connects, technical and synthesis meetings, and ELNs. CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT
The role is office and lab-based reporting to the Global R&D Director for Photoinitiators. The role holder must be able to meet and interact confidently with other departments and levels of seniority and always represent the company in a professional capacity. The role had direct reports from R&D technician. The role may require travel domestically and non-domestically.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

• New Product Development: Initiation, development and tech transfer of new product developments/projects.
• Defines training, equipment investment and resources required for the Synthesis lab and meet the goals of the NPD funnel.
• Working safely; using and understanding existing COSHH and risk assessments and writing new COSHH and risk assessments. Following quality procedures, safety procedures and SOPs.
• Generate and distribute technical reports & orepare invention records as appropriate.
• Represent the PI portion of the Sartomer business in the Global Innovation Team. QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Educated to PhD in Organic Chemistry/ a related field.
• Experience in Photo initiator and acrylate chemistry.
• Experience in managing a team.
