Under the direction of the Plant Manager, the Quality Systems Manager, plans, implements and manages quality systems at the plant.  Utilizing a staff of chemists, the position maintains quality process analysis and gives guidance to the production team enabling in-spec products to reach our customers on a timely basis.  The incumbent drives ISO and corporate quality compliance, organizing and supporting annual audits and works with the larger Coating Solutions Platform to design, implement and manage quality systems for the site.  The Quality Systems Manager sits in an office / laboratory environment within a chemical manufacturing site. In the role, activities may include:


Lab Management (25%)

  • Manage day to day quality control activities to ensure accurate testing of in process, final product and raw material samples  
  • Responsible for the site quality control budget including cost saving and systems improvements
  • Ensure good house keeping and organization in the quality control lab
  • Support troubleshooting activities in the lab to ensure lab systems and equipment are able to support plant production on a 24/7 schedule
  • Work with safety and technical functions to approve and issue raw material specifications
  • Develop and manage the use of statistical techniques to monitor the operation of the lab processes


Analytical Oversight (20%)

  • Ensure the lab equipment and processes are maintained and improved to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the lab personal
  • Lead projects to design, purchase and install new laboratory equipment
  • Innovate to find less complex testing procedures to drive overall increases in plant productivity
  • Work with safety, technical and R&D functions to support the on-site pilot plant and in building the quality control programs for new products  


People and Organizational management (20%)

  • Manage the makeup and hiring of the quality control department staffing
  • Coordinate the training of current and new hires.  Develop training programs for on quality systems for non lab department personnel and develop training programs for the development and growth of the lab department staff.
  • Manage overtime, vacation, attendance and work schedules to ensure the lab is properly staffed to meet production needs.  Use HR tools to administer lab staff payroll


Quality Systems Management (35%)

  • Work with the larger Arkema Coating Solutions Platform to design, implement and manage quality control systems for the site, including controlled document management
  • Maintain and approve raw material, final product specifications and specification tracking systems
  • Organize and lead internal and external audits of the site quality systems, coordinate the periodic Management System Review.  Develop and track KPI for the operation of the quality control lab for the plant quality control systems. 
  • Serve as the Quality Management representative for ISO 9001:2015 at the site
  • Oversee and improve laboratory information management systems for quality records and sample management.  Manage and improve the process for linking quality results to final product approval and inventory status  
  • Contribute to overall site implementation of SMART programs, focusing on the lab team
  • Work with manufacturing, technical, R&D and commercial teams across the Arkema Coating Solutions platform to manage the process for addressing costumer concerns and complaints with products manufactured at the West Chester site
  • Lead investigations and review measurements (trend analysis) that monitor key plant quality control points to identify quality improvement opportunities  
  • Responsible for monthly quality reporting, including COPQ (Cost of Poor Quality) and RFT (Right First Time)


The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree (Chemistry preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in a supervisory capacity
  • 5 years' experience in an analytical lab
  • Strong background in statistical design and analysis
  • Familiarity with chemical processes and analytical techniques (NIR, HPLC, GC, FTIR, LC)
  • Experience with SAP/LIMS strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of current ISO quality systems and standards
