Situation in organization
Reports to Corporate R&D Director. No formal direct reports but will lead long-term R&D programs and work with lab personnel to design and perform research studies.

 

Job dimensions
Identify and assess viability of new hot-melt adhesive (HMA) technologies for industrial applications
Design and manage programs to evaluate new Upstream technologies in HMPA
Perform lab studies to screen new polyester-based adhesive technologies
Assist in the development of new products and improved application processes
Work in cross-functional teams (product development, applied technology, marketing, and sales) to screen and commercialize new technologies
Communicate Upstream R&D programs to key stakeholders
Occasional travel required (< 10%)

 

Activities
Identify and critically evaluate new technologies for next generation polyester-based HMA; direct technical aspects of new programs including defining program objectives, milestones, and resource needs.
Design and perform lab-scale experiments to screen new classes of raw materials and production methods; assemble data and document findings.
Closely monitor IP landscape and continually review literature to identify novel raw materials for HMA systems
Interact with research, plant, marketing, and business personnel as well as key customers to identify technologies to address current and anticipated market needs
Characterize physical and mechanical properties of adhesives using a variety of analytical techniques
Document results and summarize findings in formal written reports and invention disclosures
Perform job hazard assessments and develop best practices for lab procedures. Ensure work space is clean and well-organized
Practice safe work habits in accordance with OSHA and EPA guidelines, and Bostik specific EHS expectations
Context and environment
The job involves identifying, critically evaluating, and developing programs to study new technologies to improve the performance and/or overall understanding of polyester-based HMA systems for industrial applications. Role will leverage knowledge of PD/marketing groups and senior R&D leadership to provide new platform technologies for smart HMA solutions in current and new industrial applications/markets. 

 

 

Accountabilities

Identify and assess new polymer technologies with potential to offer step-change improvements to Bostik adhesive portfolio; with business and marketing teams; and, ensure programs align with business initiatives, market needs, and long-term vision of Bostik innovation committee.
Perform experiments and assemble data from studies designed to demonstrate benefits of new technologies over the prior art of the field; assist in efforts to capture Bostik IP on key systems as based on business needs.
Record and communicate data: summarize results of findings in written reports; and, present data to key stakeholders.
Provide background and technology overview to internal research teams; advise product development teams in efforts to deploy Upstream innovations in commercial adhesives.
Work with sales, marketing, and technical service to assist in solving customer concerns and developing opportunities for current and next-generation adhesives
Support scale up of new technologies including development specifications as well as QC and other methods to ensure product / raw material quality and consistency
Support sales, marketing, and AT in developing technical relationships with key customers

 

Qualifications / experience required

Minimum M.S degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or other relevant technical field (math, computer science, physics, etc.) with 5+ years of experience; PhD Highly preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to describe results of studies within Bostik global R&D community as well as to business teams and external customers.
High intellectual curiosity and excellent problem solving skills
Willingness to take direction, but also work both independently and as a part of a collaborative team
