Lab Technician


Arkema in King of Prussia, PA, is looking for an experienced machine operator to work in a Research and Development (R&D) lab setting as a Lab Technician. The Lab Technician receives material from Chemists, blends with other materials as needed, processes the materials through mechanical pieces of equipment, and then tests the processed materials. The Lab Technician will be concerned with processing the products requested of them to make the required parts and will support the variety of testing related needs to benefit the team.


What DON’T you need to be qualified for this role?

While this position is working in a lab as part of the R&D team, prior lab experience and an R&D background is NOT required although would be a plus. We will teach you “the science part.”


What DO you need to be successful in this role?  

What you do need is a machine operator background, mechanical inclination, willingness to learn about our products and processes, excellent attention to detail, and a “how can I help” mentality. You will also need to lift up to 50 lbs for material weigh-ups.


This role supports the Plastic Additives R&D team, an intimate team of seven (7) people and reports to the Sr. Technical Service Engineer. This position and this team would be a good fit for someone specifically looking for a team oriented environment.

Situation in organization

Based in King of Prussia, PA at Arkema’s Corporate Offices and R&D Center. This position reports to a Sr. Technical Service Engineer who reports to the Plastic Additives R&D Manager.

 Job dimensions

Conducts technical service and research projects for the Plastic Additives group. Working with a Sr. Technical Service Engineer to carry out all polymer processing, polymer testing, and laboratory duties to successful completion. Follow detailed formulation directions, written procedures, and test protocols to meet project timelines. Communicate effectively with project leaders, peers, and team members on laboratory results. Conduct work in a safe, neat, and clean manner. Gain increasing experience and knowledge of polymer processing and ASTM test procedures. 


Performance of melt processing activities requires a person who is adept at using various hand, electric, and pneumatic tools (often referred to as being mechanically minded). Manual lifting and movement of tooling and materials is part of the job. 


Key Activities and responsibilities

  • Prepare polymer formulations for processing.
  • Set up and conduct polymer processing as directed including: twin-screw compounding, sheet extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, and milling.
  • Conduct laboratory testing on polymer formulations or processed polymers including mechanical and rheological testing.
  • Coordinate testing performed in other departments.
  • Document all laboratory work, process conditions, observations in an electronic laboratory notebook. Organize data in spreadsheets.
  • Maintain, verify, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain and manage material storage areas.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all Arkema safety protocols and procedures. Participate in safety improvement programs and suggest improvements.


Context and environment

Tasks and responsibilities (including day-to-day priorities) will be assigned by a Sr. Technical Service Engineer. Overall goals and objectives, both short and long term, are approved by the Sr. Technical Service Engineer in conjunction/coordination with the R&D Manager. 

  •  Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc(e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • AA Degree strongly preferred


  Demonstrated Competencies

  • Experience with polymer processing preferred
  • Mechanical orientation to conduct experiments and maintain equipment
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient with computer software applications (word processing and spreadsheets)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work with others to solve problems
  • Excellent organizational skills
