Director, Compensation (North America)


Situation in Organization

Reports directly to the Sr Director Compensation, Benefits and M&A. Position has 2 direct reports (Sr Compensation Analyst and Compensation Analyst II) and 1 shared resource (Manager HR and Compensation).


Job Dimensions

Responsible for the design, implementation and ongoing evaluation of Arkema Inc’s compensation programs for the US, Mexico and Canada. Works with executive management to ensure compensation programs and policies support business strategy, cost philosophy and long-term objectives, as well as being legally compliant. Supports all compensation initiatives launched by Corporate (Arkema France). Acts as a consultant to HR Brazil.


Key Activities and Responsibilities


Compensation Program Design & Administration (80-95%)

  • Act as change agent; on-going harmonization and improvement of Compensation practices across entities/regions and due to M&A activity, reconcile divergent methodologies for job levelling (Hay vs Market), embrace global work environment.
  • Oversees the data gathering and merit budget recommendations to Corporate for regions currently supported by Arkema Inc. (US, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia).
  • Manages the design, planning and ongoing delivery of annual enterprise-wide compensation programs via Success Factors (North America application). These include base pay/merit increases (and supporting statements), annual incentive calculations and payments (and supporting statements) and communication of each year’s incentive design (via on-line view). Responsible for related activities, including training and supporting program documentation, as well as the presentation of North America outcomes and cost to Arkema Inc. CEO. via reports and approval meetings.
  • Designs the AIPs (Annual Incentive Plans (3) for Corporate, Business and Manufacturing) with Arkema Inc. executive management and Arkema HR leadership in France. Communicates plans to Arkema Inc. executive team.
  • Supervises the design, communication and administration of the Sales Incentive Plan, which spans all Arkema Inc. business units.
  • Partners on the annual Executive Total Reward process, including collaboration with Arkema Inc. and Arkema France leadership.
  • Reviews job evaluations (market pricings), job ladders, market studies, and equity analyses performed by Compensation staff. Makes recommendations for process improvements surrounding internal practices, while maintaining compliance requirements.
  • Collaborates with Arkema France for the annual granting of Restricted Stock by Arkema Inc. leadership.
  • Supports due diligence and/or post acquisition activities as required, merging diverse compensation programs and policies.
  • Acts as compensation matter expert for HR Generalists and business management to assess business or organizational need and provide advice.
  • Collaborates with Legal, Finance and other stakeholders as needed.



Global Compensation Systems and Projects (5-15%)

  • Act as Compensation leader as part of global HR/Compensation team in framing and implementing global compensation processes and projects.
  • Oversees the evaluation and implementation of new technological solutions that increase the efficiency of compensation processes.



Global Mobility (5-15%)

  • Serves as Compensation expert for expatriate moves into the US; also serves as contact for tax vendor (PWC) and HR point person for the reconciliation and collection of US tax repayment by expats. Contact for Accounting for invoicing and related expat charges.


Context and Environment

  • Minimal travel
  • Operates in an environment of time sensitive business cycles and need to adhere to critical deadlines.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participate in HES and DEI activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavior Based Safety, SafeStart, etc)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near miss, accident or injury incidents.


Required Education/Qualifications /Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or related field or equivalent experience: and advanced degree (Master’s/MBA or CCP designation) is highly desirable.
  • Requires 10+years of compensation design, administration and implementation experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.
  • Deep and comprehensive knowledge of retention/project bonuses, base pay, short-term incentive design and long-term incentive devices/programs required.
  • Current knowledge of Compensation laws and regulations required.
  • North American compensation knowledge and experience working and partnering in a global organization a plus.
  • Experience in working with global mobility programs, especially taxes, desired.
  • Strong Excel skills, experience with HRIS and ERP systems required; SAP and Success Factors experience preferred.
