Sr Engineer/ Staff Engineer Job

Position leads our application development and technical support for several key PEKK growth markets- 3D Printing, Powder Coating, and melt processing applications- serving as our process expert for PEKK. 

Supports technical growth strategy across the PEKK product line: flake, pellets, compounds and powder and in multiple markets (energy, semicon, transportation).   Looks for opportunity for material innovation in these markets via exploration of novel PEKK formulation with a specific focus on PEKK alloys/ blends.  Secures PEKK value by filing IP and helping lead PEKK IP strategy in specific technology areas.  Leads involvement in DoD funded contract (UDel TuFF program) including start-up of extruder at Birdsboro and potential Phase 2 extrusion quality improvements and optimization of TuFF thermoforming.

Collaborates with PEKK commercial team to develop and execute strategies for diversification growth opportunities:

  • Provides technical support to existing PEKK customers and new PEKK prospects including generating and providing relevant samples, testing and in-person trial support.
  • Drives technical relationships with key PEKK partners at different point on the value chain.
  • Find ways to accelerate developments via initiating collaboration with customers, suppliers or other external sources of R&D/innovation (academia, national labs)
  • Leads application development research efforts to prove PEKK value proposition (processing, benchmarking, certification testing) and establishes technical and marketing literature to promote.
  • Represents Arkema on standards committees.
  • Proposes new projects and coordinates these ideas with business and manufacturing counterparts

Leads global technology improvement efforts such as PEKK compounding optimization, black speck reduction, PEKK color or thermal stability via planning and coordination of projects with colleagues in EU.

Technically supports production of PEKK product line via providing scientific expertise and guidance to teams at Mobile, Birdsboro and tollers.  Assists in activities to support product stewardships and supply chain decisions as needed.

Manages laboratory and develops new tools / acquires new equipment to carry out needed experiments.

Context and Environment:

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Physical ability to operate polymer processing (injection, extrusion, compression) and testing equipment
  • 20-25% Travel

Required Qualifications:

BS/MS in Material Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related degree with two to ten years of industrial experience.  The following are required:

  • Expertise in polymer processing with 3DP, powder coating and melt processing experience all a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical relationships with customers.
  • Experience in polymer application development
  • Experience in materials structure property characterization a strong plus
