The Senior Staff Technician This job supports key new product development projects. The position conducts laboratory studies and polymer processing trials, polymer testing, conducts data analysis for new product developments. Multiple technical programs will be managed concurrently.  Good team work and communications skills are essential to success. Performance of melt processing activities on the floor requires a person who is adept at using various hand, electric and pneumatic tools (often referred to as having good hands-on experience).  Manual lifting and movement of tooling and materials is part of the job, and will be often happen - dependent on the work to be performed.  Good physical strength and health is important. 

 

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Performs Polymer Processing

  • Set up and conduct plastic processing as directed including: 
    • Twin-screw compounding, injection molding, compression molding, tube extrusion, film extrusion, etc.
    • Document results and processing condition and troubleshoot equipment & processes.
    • Maintain identified equipment/tooling and help define safe operating procedures & schedule maintenance.
    • Maintain and manage material storage areas.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions & processing problems

 

Collects Data

  • Accurately document all observations and results in electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Organize and analyze data in spreadsheets and simple reports

 

Laboratory Testing & Analysis

  • Perform lab testing of materials as needed including mechanical and rheological testing
  • Coordinate testing performed in other departments (Analytical, etc)
  • Support laboratory experiments, chemical and environmental aging of polymers, conduct various tests polymer parts (e.g., physical/mechanical/weathering).

 

Safety & Other duties

  • Order equipment supplies 
  • Follow all Arkema safety protocols and proceedures
  • Actively participate in safety improvement programs including 5S

 

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT

 

Tasks and responsibilities (including day-to-day priorities) will be assigned by a Principal Scientist.  Overall goals and objectives, both short and long term, are coordinated between R&D Management &  the Principal Scientist in conjunction/coordination with the R&D Manager.  Management of multiple priorities and sometimes changing priorities is one of the challenges that requires high flexibility and strong organization skills.  

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Maintain safe working environment.  Maintain documentation system including lab notebooks and electronic tech service system and organized files.  Design internal processing trials and analysis to diagnose and solve polymer processing problems for customers or develop new processing capabilities. Complete timely reports for work completed.  Develop product and processing expertise related to markets and customers. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

  • 10+ years of applicable experience in plastics processing and testing
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Good math skills for conducting calculations and proficiency with excel for calculations and graphing
  • Proficient with computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.).
  • Excellent organization skills, strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience and training in plastics processing equipment
  • Hands on orientation to conduct experiments, maintain equipment
