Senior Staff Technician Job

The Polymer Processing Technician supports key development projects and technical service activities under the direction of a Principal Scientist. The position will require the incumbent to plan experimental programs in conjunction with the principal scientist, and then conduct polymer processing trials and testing programs. The incumbent will become an expert in polymer processing, testing and analysis based upon the experience gained in this position, and will need to manage multiple tasks concurrently. The position will also requires ownership of some of the processing equipment commonly utilized in our highbay.  Good team work and communications skills are essential to success. All data will be recorded in processing logs, and electronic notebooks.

 

Performance of melt processing activities on the floor requires a person who is adept at using various hand, electric and pneumatic tools (often referred to as having good hands-on experience).  Manual lifting and movement of tooling and materials is part of the job, and will be often happen - dependent on the work to be performed.  Good physical strength and health is important. 

 

 

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Performs Polymer Processing

  • Twin screw extrusion of formulated compounds, profile extrusion, film extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, etc.
  • Follow established procedures.
  • Recommend and test improvement to methods and equipment as needed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
  • Assist with the development of new procedures and processing method

 

Collects Data

  • Accurately document all observations and results in electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Organize and analyze data to explain conclusions to an internal audience.
  • Write simple summaries of results.
  • Propose explanations and solutions to deviations from expected results.

 

Maintains Equipment

  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on owned equipment; troubleshoot owned equipment and recommend improvements as needed. Train other operators as needed.

 

Laboratory Testing

  • Support laboratory experiments, chemical and environmental aging of polymers, conduct various tests polymer parts (e.g., physical/mechanical/weathering).
  • Prepare test specimens via cutting, edge finishing, milling, etc.
  • Assemble test fixtures to enable accurate and repeatable analysis.
  • Follow established procedures.

 

Other duties as assigned

  • Order equipment supplies and maintain good housekeeping of equipment.
  • Participate in safety programs and conduct all work in accordance with site and corporate safety guidelines.
  • Perform area housekeeping and participate in 5S program

 

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT

 

Tasks and responsibilities (including day-to-day priorities) will be assigned by a Principal Scientist.  Overall goals and objectives, both short and long term, are provided to the Principal Scientist in conjunction/coordination with the R&D Manager.  Management of multiple priorities and sometimes changing priorities is one of the challenges that requires high flexibility and strong organization skills.  

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Maintain safe working environment.  Maintain documentation system including lab notebooks and electronic tech service system and organized files.  Design internal processing trials and analysis to diagnose and solve polymer processing problems for customers or develop new processing capabilities. Complete timely reports for work completed.  Develop product and processing expertise related to markets and customers. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

 

  • 10+ years of applicable experience in plastics processing and testing
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Good math skills for conducting calculations and proficiency with excel for calculations and graphing
  • Proficient with computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, presentations, etc.).
  • Excellent organization skills, strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience and training in plastics processing equipment
  • Hands on orientation to conduct experiments, maintain equipment
