The position will be based at Arkema’s R&D Center at the US Headquarters in King of Prussia, PA, and reports to the R&D Director for Fluorochemicals Americas.

 

Job Dimensions

This is a high visibility role for an experienced R&D Scientist/Engineer, responsible for leading innovative process development for new and existing products as well as contributing to productivity improvement projects for Arkema’s Fluorinated Specialties business unit.  The role collaborates with colleagues and partners around the world, leveraging Arkema's global technical expertise and external networks in an inclusive innovation culture to drive sustainable growth.

 

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Work with cross-functional teams in a stage-gated project management process to develop innovative process technologies required to bring new products to market, from lab to pilot to full-scale manufacturing in-house or at a toller.
  • Propose and evaluate alternative proprietary process technology concepts to support the manufacture of new or existing products for improved cost productivity, product quality, sustainability, etc., for competitive advantage.
  • Design and set up laboratory equipment for studying complex reaction mechanisms and kinetics in gas or liquid phase with or without catalysts; collect, analyze, interpret and report experimental results; and recommend course of action based on project timeline and insights from available chemical and engineering information.  Lead and participate in process hazard analyses and SOP development.
  • Stay current with technical and industry trends, as well as relevant technical and scientific literature, translating insights into actionable research initiatives to improve/ensure product and process performance and sustainability. 
  • Protect and defend Arkema intellectual property. 
  • Responsible for high standard of laboratory safety and rigorous adherence to safety protocols and procedures.

 

Context and Environment:

The position is part of a diverse team that manufactures and develops specialty fluorinated materials for use in a wide variety of applications – from thermal management solutions to advanced materials for energy storage and electronics.  The candidate will work safely and collaboratively with other technical staff at all levels in a hands-on research laboratory environment. They will report directly to the R&D Director, but will also interface with higher levels of Arkema R&D and business leadership, and with international colleagues. There will be travel to partner sites, conferences and other Arkema locations (~20%).  In addition, the candidate will:

  • Support the site HES policy and comply with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participate in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavior Based Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Act in strict accordance with Arkema code of conduct

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant industrial experience in process development, preferably in a pilot plant or semiworks setting. 
  • MS degree in Chemical Engineering with 10+ years of relevant industrial experience in process development will also be considered.
  • ​​​Experience with liquid and gas phase reactors at elevated temperature and pressure.
  • In-depth knowledge of physical and analytical chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, reaction engineering and catalysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of collaboration, networking and teamwork.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
  • Self-starting ability with exceptional time and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving/troubleshooting and data analysis skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude with proficiency in hands-on set-up and operation of various types of research equipment.
  • Ability to read/understand/write patents to maximize IP value capture.

 

The following skill sets are preferred:

  • Six sigma green belt certification, or demonstrated equivalent skills
  • Experience handling high hazard materials
  • Direct experience with process validation and transfer to manufacturing
