Senior Process Engineer (PRD Calculations) Job

This position is a member of the Central Process Engineering Group and reports functionally to the Project Development Manager as part of corporate technology, located in King of Prussia PA.  It is technically supported by Arkema SME engineers in the Central Process/Technology Organization.  

 

Job Dimensions

Working in the central project process organization on multiple process assignments with initial focus for first 2 years working on closing pressure relief device (PRD) calculation gaps and later evolving into more broad process assignments. Scope of role will include acquiring data, PRD calculations and finally proposing engineering solutions for any deficiencies. Scope includes all sites within AMAS to implement Arkema standards and industry best practices. The role is supported and mentored by Arkema team peers.

 

Key Activities & Responsibilities

PRD Calculations (80%)
Acquire input information

  • Collect site information such as equipment files, PIDs, U1s, nameplates, kinetic data.
  • Prepare field information needed such as isometric sketches, piping diagrams, etc.
  • Digest information from safety studies, such as PHA scenarios.
  • Recommend any necessary physical property lab work, such as ARC, DCS or VSP.

 

Perform scenario assessment

  • Create scenario list relevant to the valve cross referencing PHA and any other needed documents.
  • Gain approval from Arkema process owner for scenarios to be calculated

 

Perform Calculations

  • Assess 2 phase flow scenarios, and coordinate 2 phase calculation with expert
  • Using Aspen or other approved software
  • Document using Arkema or other approved calculation sheets
  • Make recommendations for any more complex analysis, such as dynamic simulation

 

Approvals and Closure

  • Gain final approval
  • Close documentation and handover to plant

 

Prepare process engineering packages for remediation

  • Red line P&ID
  • Valve sizing and selection
  • Necessary piping or other modification (isometric)
  • Alternative solutions such as HIPS (high integrity protection system -aka instrumentation alternative)

 

General Activities: (20%)
Interact with Engineering and Construction, R&D, Pilot, Business, and Manufacturing to develop cost effective processes / projects.

  • Conduct basic studies and process analysis; develop equipment sizes
  • Study process alternatives and develop preliminary economics analysis
  • Prepare conceptual PFD’s, P&IDs, material balance, etc. for process improvement or capital projects
  • Contribute to PHA’s and other HES activities
  • Provide plant support as necessary and participate in development of operating procedures, process documents, etc.

 

Context & Environment

  • Will require domestic travel (30%).
  • Supports Arkema HES policies.
  • Complies with all regulatory and Arkema standards requirements
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents

 

Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering or similar discipline required.
  • Minimum 4-5 years experience working with chemical processes, Co-op/intern experience may be considered if such experience is directly relevant to duties and responsibilities of the role..
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply Engineering tools and methods to identify and/or resolve moderately complex problems.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification or progress toward strongly preferred.
  • Capital project experience and experience in assembling engineering packages.

Demonstrated Competencies

  • Proven competency in chemical processes
  • Is recognized to be competent in engineering and technology calculations
  • Proficient in Aspen modelling software.
  • Proficient in pressure relief calculations.
  • Knows basic digital tools, such as data historian, databases and electronic filing.
  • Ability to travel independently to Arkema sites, and perform calculations with remote supervision.
  • Can interpret data to generate solutions.
  • Prepare strong reports and proposals and ability to present technical work to management
  • Consistently meets deadlines.
  • Effectively organize and plan work and request help/approvals as needed.
  • Is recognized as a trusted resource by customers.
  • Intermediate skills in HES.
