Senior Pilot Plant Engineer Job

This position is a member of the Central Process Technology organization, supporting all Arkema processes and is located in King of Prussia Pilot Plant, reporting to the Pilot Plant Manager.  This position does not have any direct reports, but is expected to give direction to hourly operators and contribute through teams.

 

Key Activities & Responsibilities:  

 

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Operations (50%)

  • Assists Lead Engineer with pilot plant schedule with R&D and Process Technology teams and provides support to daily activities in executing BU pilot programs and campaigns.
  • Creates and maintains operating procedures, manuals and run sheets.
  • Support troubleshooting and appropriate root-cause analysis and accountable for implementation of associated corrective actions.
  • Updates daily, monthly operation summaries, environmental reports.
  • Understands engineering fundamentals and can apply to business or site specific technology, equipment, unit operations and control technology.

 

Process (20%)

  • Participates in planning, execution, troubleshooting and data analysis for various pilot programs
  • Supports the maintenance and troubleshoots DCS-HMI systems in the Pilot Plant & Boilerhouse
  • Maintains & updates P&ID’s, PFD’s, and operating procedures for pilot processes
  • Supports design of new equipment and pilot plant small capex projects, including work with internal SME’s and functions and external entities (i.e. construction contractors, Arkema corporate purchasing, and consultants) as needed. Participates in commissioning activities.

 

Safety & Environmental (20%)

  • Understands and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment.  Has a working knowledge of the process safety management standard and assists in resolving issues identified in internal and external audits. 
  • Supports Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and implementation of associated action items. 
  • Pilot plant representative for Process Hazard Analyses and is responsible for assigned action items.

 

Talent Development & Engagement (10%)

  • Supports the recruiting process for entry-level engineers and performs role of a Peer Advisor to new DE’s.
  • Has interest and displays a good attitude for continued learning.  Takes advantage of training opportunities and applies skills to daily work.

 

Context & Environment

  • The position in based in King of Prussia, and requires frequent presence in the pilot plant operating area and typically minimal travel. 
  • Works with Pilot Plant Manager to develop priorities and executes assignments with limited supervision.
  • Works with other engineers, research scientists, technicians and other personnel to provide engineering support.
  • Effectively collaborates with operations, research, corporate support groups, and management teams.
  • Supports Engineering and Technology initiatives, such as digital program, process book initiative, Team of Teams, etc.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Sets own career directions and customizes own development plan. 

 

Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering is required.
  • More than 3 years industrial experience.

 

Demonstrated Competencies

Competencies listed below are expected of an individual who is proficient in the role.  Candidates would be expected to achieve these competencies within 2 years.

  • Fluent understanding of pilot plant process chemistry, technology, unit operations, and control technology. applies know-how to problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Efficient use of six sigma tools in the normal work process and develops project opportunities based on data analysis. Coaches less experienced engineers to use appropriate data analysis tools.
  • High competency in modelling and internal methods and tools.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing solutions to close compliance items and contributing to cause analysis.
  • PHA leader or advanced participant. Understanding of safety critical safeguard calculations.  Basic understanding of PSM and RMP overall program.
  • Project team member; supports capital projects by gathering and providing data for the options being analysed.
  • Actively networks and consults within business units and support functions.  Actively participates in corporate initiatives. 
  • Messaging, presentations and written reporting to manufacturing site audience/departmental level.
  • Competently networks within KOP site and networks across business unit/support functions. Mentors less experienced engineers.
  • Contributes to process specific intellectual property.
  • Assists in completion of CSR (ESG) deliverables for projects and plant support programs.  Contributes to climate change roadmap.
  • Competence in digital manufacturing tools and programming historian data and process control systems and an expertise in one or more digital tools.
  • Is recognized within the KOP site to be competent in engineering and technology calculations and digital tools
