JOB DIMENSIONS

 

The Senior Pilot Plant Engineer uses technical knowledge, judgement and engineering skills to develop solutions to a variety of technical challenges to support pilot scale development programs and projects for a variety of BU customers. This role performs normally unsupervised engineering work dealing with the daily pilot plant operations, communicating chemical process runs with operators, development of process technology for capital projects, improving pilot plant safety & reliability and/or testing new equipment concepts.  This role also has responsibility for the pilot plant and boiler house DCS systems and associated programming and configuration.  Position requires daily presence in the pilot operating units and a strong desire to work hands-on with pilot plant operators.  The role interacts with a wide variety of support resources including engineers, R&D scientists, safety, maintenance, and contractors. 

 

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Operations (60%)

  • Coordinates pilot plant schedule with R&D and Process Technology teams and provides support to daily activities in executing BU pilot programs and campaigns.
  • Creates and maintains operating procedures, manuals and runsheets.
  • Leads advanced troubleshooting and appropriate root-cause analysis and accountable for implementation of associated corrective actions.
  • Applies statistical methods and Six Sigma tools to analyze campaign data, optimize operations, identify improvement opportunities and implement solutions to deliver value to BU customers.

 

Process (20%)

  • Understands pilot plant process technology, equipment, unit operations, and control technology and looks for opportunities to apply new technology to improve existing processes. 
  • Communicates technical information and issues to pilot plant leadership and BU Process Technology teams; identifies and collaborates with external resources when needed. 
  • Maintains and configures the pilot plant and boiler house process control system and manages recipe management system.
  • Manages assigned capital projects, budgets and execution.  Leads project commissioning and start-up activities for assigned projects.

 

Safety & Environmental (15%)

 

  • Understands and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment.  Has a working knowledge of the process safety management standard and is responsible for resolving issues identified in internal and external audits. 
  • Leads Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and is responsible for implementation of associated action items. 
  • Participates as the pilot plant representative for Process Hazard Analyses and is responsible for assigned action items.

 

Talent & Engagement (5%)

  • Supports the recruiting process for entry-level engineers and may perform role of co-op supervisor.
  • Has interest and displays a good attitude for continued learning.  Looks for opportunities to increase skills, attends training, and stays current with trends in industry.

 

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT

  • Position based in King of Prussia, and requires frequent presence in the pilot plant operating area. 
  • Works with manager to develop priorities and executes assignments with limited supervision.
  • Works with senior engineers, research scientists, technicians and other personnel to provide engineering support.
  • Effectively collaborates with operations, research, corporate support groups, and management teams to implement changes to systems, procedures and equipment to improve the safety and reliability of operations.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE

  • This position requires a minimum B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and minimum 3 years professional experience in chemical manufacturing or piloting or related industry experience. 
  • Familiarity with federal health and safety regulations for chemical industry
  • Familiarity with principles of Process Safety (PHA, LOPA, Safety Instrumented Systems)
  • Familiarity with systematic Root Cause Investigation (TapRoot preferred)
  • Understands basics of the process control systems and data historians, DeltaV experience preferred.
