Senior Director, Goods and Services Purchasing Job

This position reports to the Sr. VP, NA Group Manufacturing Arkema, Inc. and dotted line indirectly to the Global leader for GASP.


Key Activities and Responsibilities


Strategic Management 70%

  • Develop the strategy and ensure effective execution around the identification, assessment and contracting of engineering contractors and services for large Industrial projects in North America.
  • Digital roadmap: define & deploys the tools for an efficient & effective execution for strategic & tactical buy. Seek continuous benchmark to identify & implement the most effective practices available in the market.
  • Improve the efficiency & the customer service of tactical buy (operations team) with automatic orders, catalogs, simplification & technology.
  • Establish high performance purchasing capability for goods and services that meets the needs of the Arkema group in North America, the plants and the business units.
  • Establish a purchasing program that generates significant annual savings & improves working capital while balancing safety, sustainable development compliance and service levels required. Get alignment with finance and BU on the identification of the savings in the P&L.
  • Participate in definition and deployment of the global category strategies defined by the WW category councils


Collaborative Actions 30%

  • Define the target organization in roles and competencies for goods & services and CAPEX projects purchasing, propose and implement the changes to achieve it.
  • Drive continuous improvement activities to improve overall purchasing effectiveness and cost performance improvements for goods & services
  • Oversee the development, and drive the improvement of appropriate metrics for goods and services purchasing in agreement with the Global GASP organization.
  • Install a culture of excellence and sustainable improvement consistent with a high performance team.
  • Manage effectively ongoing interactions with key stakeholders (manufacturing: plants and US/French corporate industrial and engineering teams), Business along with Purchasing/Supply Chain teams in Europe and Asia.


Context and Environment


  • Position must follow all Arkema Inc. policies and procedures and be aware of all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the strategic goals and objectives of the departments, including controlling/managing annual spend of $400 million, in light of constant changing business conditions.
  • Frequent contacts:  Management Committee members, Manufacturing Directors, Supply Chain Directors, plant managers.  Executives from key national suppliers for goods & services purchasing
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, business, technical study, or equivalent.  Master degree preferred.
  • 15+ years’ experience in a chemical or industrial company, with multiple manufacturing locations. 
  • 10+ years’ experience in procurement. 
  • anufacturing knowledge needed. Experience working with the manufacturing plants required.
  • 10+ years of people management experience.
  • Department administration and budget experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, work process redesign, change management, and culture change.
  • Demonstrated success in bringing significant improvements to the systems, infrastructure, and disciplines that underlie an understanding of procurement policies and practices.
  • Strong strategic and analytical approach.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage manufacturing and engineering stakeholders and be responsive to their concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, engage and effectively deal with various vendors and suppliers.
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to link business goals and effectively sell those goals to his/her team and business unit management
