Senior Chemist/Senior Research Chemist - Separations Lab - Analytical and Systems Research Job

This position is responsible for generating analyses in support of Arkema’s R&D programs, technical service and manufacturing efforts for the N. American Business Units. The data is generated for internal and external customers with moderate supervision. This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of chromatography tools and methods in a dynamic laboratory environment shared with other team members. Work is to be performed in accordance to safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Arkema’s safety initiatives and programs.
Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Comply with all departmental and corporate safety policies
- Prepare and analyze samples using liquid chromatography (LC), gas chromatography (GC), and these techniques coupled with mass spectrometry
- Maintain laboratory notebooks, obtain data, write technical reports, and propose additional experiments as needed
- Communicate results to Group Leader and to internal customers
- Perform routine instrument maintenance independently and via interfacing with instrument vendors as needed
Context and Environment:
Position is part of the US subsidiary of a large international chemical company. Position holder reports directly to the Group Leader/Research Scientist (ASR) but will also interact regularly with other Separations’ lab staff and ASR staff. Position holder is responsible for conducting analyses in a dynamic laboratory environment under moderate supervision. Position holder must interface with the R&D technical community to understand technical/analytical needs and the impact of analytical results.
- Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
- Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
- Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incident
Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry with 5+ years or Master’s degree in chemistry with 3+ years of relative industrial experience
- Ability to handle and work with hazardous materials, and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment
- Experience using liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and liquid and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for qualitative and quantitative analysis of small molecules and polymers
- Experience with various sample preparation techniques including dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, and microwave assisted extraction
- Ability to execute experimental plans including sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis
- Experience developing chromatography and mass spectrometry methods for small molecule and polymer analysis
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair chromatography instrumentation as needed
