Senior Central Process Engineer Job

This position is a member of the Central Process Technology organization, supporting all Americas processes and is located in King of Prussia, PA.  This position reports to the Project Development Manager as part of corporate engineering and technology and has no direct reports.


Key Activities & Responsibilities:

Represent Arkema at Engineering, Procurement & Construction Contractor (EPC) office.   20%

-Answer EPC questions, consulting with Arkema team as needed.

-Make technical decisions at EPC on behalf of Arkema.

-Approve design output from EPC, including but not limited to:

  -PFD and material balance


  -Equipment lists and specifications

  -Process and safety device calculations including dust protection systems

  -Participate in design reviews

- Close action items from the HAZOP and DHA  as assigned.

-Support development of control strategy.


Support process conceptual studies.  20%

  -Interface with global R&D and process technology leading to piloting and other scale up activities, process technology development and subsequent process engineering.

  -Run pilot studies at Arkema’s facility or at vendors.

  -Conduct basic engineering work and process analysis on complex plant unit operations.

  -Study process alternatives and develop preliminary economics analysis.

  -Utilize process modeling software such as Aspen and interpret data to generate solutions.


Prepare process engineering packages. 40%

  -Prepare PFD’s, P&ID’s, heat and material balances, etc.

  -Prepare equipment lists, specification sheets, etc. for assigned projects.

  -Use knowledge of safety regulations and environmental issues, and incorporate them into engineering work.

  -Key participant in PHA and DHA Reviews.  Action closure for HAZOP and DHA.


Support plants.  20%

-Coordinate process tests with plants and provide oversight.       

-Develop and lead small capital projects and provides process support to larger capital projects.

-Support operations. Give direction to hourly workers and hold accountable for results.

-Assist operations as needed during deviations; use analysis skills for troubleshooting, turnaround support, etc.


Context & Environment

  • Will require domestic and occasional international travel (25%). 
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience


  • Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering is required.
  • Higher degree candidates (MS ChE) as well as higher experience level candidates will be able to provide higher value in this role. 
  • Additional certifications, such as lean six sigma are preferred. 
  • More than 4 years industrial experience in process engineering/technology roles is required.
  • Experience in supporting process safety activities at a site is preferred.


Demonstrated Competencies

Competencies listed below are expected of an individual who is proficient in the role.  Candidates would be expected to achieve these competencies within 2 years.

  • Fluent understanding of current assignment process chemistry and engineering; applies know-how to problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Efficient use of six sigma tools in the normal work process and develops project opportunities based on data analysis. Coaches less experienced engineers to use appropriate data analysis tools.
  • Complete core technical training and actively develop deeper training and understanding of relevant technology (e.g., by taking external courses and attending conferences).  Documented customized development plan to the role.
  • Full understanding of assigned process areas; technology, unit operations, and control technology.  High competency in modelling and internal methods and tools.
  • Site-recognized technology leader. May be tasked to provide support to multiple sites or across a single business unit.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing solutions to close compliance items and contributing to cause analysis.
  • PHA leader or advanced participant. Understanding of safety critical safeguard calculations.  Basic understanding of PSM and RMP overall program.
  • Project team member; supports capital projects by gathering and providing data for the options being analyzed.
  • Actively networks and consults within business unit or support function.  Actively participates in corporate initiatives.  Active team member in projects and programs using business work processes.  May lead some programs.  Messaging, presentations and written reporting to manufacturing site audience/departmental level.
  • Competently networks within site/department and networks across business unit/support functions (e.g., internal conferences). Mentors less experienced engineers.
  • Contributes to process specific intellectual property.
  • Assists in completion of CSR (ESG) deliverables for projects and plant support programs.  Contributes to climate change roadmap.
  • Competence in digital manufacturing tools and programming historian data or process control systems.
  • Developed expertise in one or more digital tools
  • Application of historian data and multiple manufacturing digital tools, simulation and databases, control at plant level with tangible results.
  • Is recognized within the site/department to be competent in engineering and technology calculations and digital tools.
