Job Title: Scientist/ Research Scientist, Fluoropolymers Research and Development 

Situation in organization

This position reports to a Manager of Fluoropolymers R&D within the High Performance Polymers R&D group, with regular input and coaching from other scientists in the group. 

Job dimensions

The person in this role will lead new product and application development efforts within our fluoropolymers innovation platforms. Initial areas of focus will include thermoplastic elastomers, as well as fluoropolymers’ adhesion and color stability. They will be conducting research as well as coordinating activities with others in R&D, Process Technology, Manufacturing, and Business Development. There is a clear expectation for collaborating with our R&D teams globally.

Key Activities and responsibilities
  • Conduct research projects to develop products and applications for new technology platforms. Determine relationships between materials composition and properties. Map out achievable materials performance. Coordinate scale-up of new products with the process technology and manufacturing teams. (50%)

  • Interpret and communicate technical results to project team members, research management, and commercial teams. (20%)

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for new Intellectual Property. (10%)

  • Generate ideas for new products/applications in areas consistent with business interests based on discussions with business development teams. (10%)

  • Monitor related scientific and patent literature to identify competitive threats and emerging growth opportunities. (10%)

Context and  environment

The position is part of a team working on developing new polymer materials for industrial and consumer applications (Water Transport and Purification, Wire & Cable, Electronics…). The candidate will work collaboratively with other technical staff at all levels in a hands-on laboratory research environment.  He/she will report directly to the R&D Manager, but will also interface with higher levels of Arkema R&D management and with international colleagues. There may be occasional travel to conferences or customer sites (~10%). In addition, the candidate will:

  • Support the site HES policy and comply with all regulatory and internal requirements.

  • Participate in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.).

  • Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents.

Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Science/Engineering or related discipline.

  • 0-3 years of experience, preferably in understanding the structure/property relationships in polymers or polymer composites. Related experience (e.g., polymer synthesis, polymer formulation, polymer processing) considered.

Demonstrated Competencies

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and evidence of technical innovation (e.g., publications, patents).

  • The ability to work and think both in a team environment and as an independent, pro-active researcher.

  • The ability to conduct research work and interpret data with minimal or no supervision.

  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills.  Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments carefully and critically in a dynamic environment.

  • Proficiency with MS Office software, including analysis and charting of data.  Experience with Design of Experiments software is a plus.

  • Ability to follow established procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and recommend/implement improvements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with both internal and external technical/commercial groups.
