Scientist (Separations)
This position is responsible for generating analytical data in support of Arkema’s R&D programs, technical service, manufacturing, and health and environmental safety efforts for the N. American Business Units. The data is generated, analyzed, and reported to internal customers with little to no supervision. This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of chromatography and mass spectrometry tools and methods in a dynamic laboratory environment shared with other team members. Work is to be performed in accordance to safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Arkema’s safety initiatives and programs.
Specific job activities include:
- Fully participate in Arkema departmental and site wide safety programs and ensures safe laboratory operation.
- Work closely with internal customers, project teams and lab colleagues to understand and solve technical problems.
- Prepare and analyze samples by gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
- Analyze and interpret data, and perform additional experiments as needed.
- Write detailed technical reports and make presentations to communicate results to multiple levels within the company.
- Maintain laboratory notebooks and appropriate records.
- Multitask effectively and manage dynamic workload including routine work and multiple projects.
- Responsible for instrument maintenance and upkeep by performing maintenance independently and interfacing with instrument vendors as needed.
- Attend conferences and monitor scientific and trade literature to stay current on latest technologies, identify relevant technologies for laboratory, and work to acquire them.
- Propose and execute ideas for lab improvements and develop new separation methodologies.
- Present/publish work externally in journals or at conferences.
- Contribute to the innovation culture at Arkema by exhibiting curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration with others to constantly improve our methods and products.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- PhD in Chemistry with 0-5 years experience OR a Master’s degree in Chemistry and a minimum of 10 years of industrial experience.
- Demonstrated ability to handle and work with hazardous materials, and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment.
- Experience with LC-MS strongly preferred.
- Experience developing and validating methods using GC and LC with various detectors (including FID, TCD, UV/Vis, and MS).
- Ability to interpret mass spectral data independently and using libraries.
- Experience with various sample preparation techniques including dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, microwave assisted extraction, and solid phase extraction.
- Experience with training others on operation of chromatographic instrumentation and implementation of methods and with mentoring junior team members.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair instrumentation as needed.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to deliver results independently, and a proven ability to collaborate is critical.
