Research Chemist – Molecular Spectroscopy

Job dimensions

Based at Arkema's Corporate Office and R&D Center in King of Prussia, PA, the Molecular Spectroscopy Scientist supports R&D efforts in new product development and technical service through Arkema’s Analytical and Systems Research group. He/she is responsible for spectral interpretation of polymers, small molecules, catalysts, and complex multi-component systems. The position reports to the Senior Scientist in Molecular Spectroscopy and collaborates closely with other colleagues within Arkema's Analytical and Systems Research group. Actively participates in Arkema’s safety initiatives and performs work in accordance to safe laboratory practices.



 -Position provides analytical information in the area of Vibrational spectroscopy to all Arkema Inc. R&D, process technology, manufacturing plants, and HES groups.

-Completes workload within project timelines. Takes broad view of data analysis; gets involved in analyzing data outside of submitted samples. Leverages other techniques, as needed, to complete projects.

-Develops methods as required to complete analysis. Generates new insights from project work.

-Aids in development of Molecular Spectroscopy Group strategic plan. Proposes and completes strategic projects related to Analytical and Systems Research

-Writes and issues technical reports

-Serves on R&D project teams and collaborate with colleagues to solve problems spanning a diverse range of chemistries.

-Helps maintain system reliability and continuity of service of vibrational lab equipment

-Develops professional network with Arkema Inc. scientists; actively participates in appropriate professional organizations.

-Develops knowledge of Arkema products and processes for the business units supported and a general understanding of business interests and markets.

-Looks for and pursues opportunities to publish/present externally

-Actively participates in Arkema’s safety programs and lead relevant safety projects as required.


Context and Environment

 Position is part of the US subsidiary of a large international chemical company. Position holder reports directly to the Senior Scientist – Molecular Spectroscopy (ASR) but also interacts with department Manager and Director. Position holder is responsible for conducting analyses in a dynamic laboratory environment with limited supervision. Position holder interfaces with Arkema’s global R&D technology network including R&D and plant sites.

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc(e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)



-Personal and lab safety.

-The quantity, quality and timeliness of the work product generated.

-Contributions to and participation in departmental safety initiatives.

-Maintains electronic laboratory notebooks and appropriate records


Qualifications/Experience Required

-MS Degree with > 5 years of industrial experience in vibrational spectroscopy. Ability to interpret complex spectra. Familiarity of Thermo-Nicolet Spectrometers is highly desirable.

-Experience with chemometrics and its application to vibrational spectroscopy

-Experience with other analytical techniques such as microscopy highly desirable.

-Passion for learning and advancing applications of molecular spectroscopy

-Excellent written and oral communication skills.

-Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating a record of collaboration and teamwork.

-Self-starter with exceptional time and project management skills.

-Demonstrated multitasking capabilities. Advances multiple projects in parallel.
