Position reports to Senior Research Scientist in Gel Permeation Chromatography Lab

No personnel reports to this position and there are no matrix relationships



This position is responsible for generating analytical data in support of Arkema’s R&D programs and technical service efforts for its North American Business Units. The analytical data is analyzed and reported to internal customers in consultation with a senior scientist/lab leader. This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of chromatography tools, organic solvents, and methods in a dynamic detailed oriented laboratory environment. Work is to be performed in accordance to safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Arkema’s safety initiatives and programs.



Prepares and runs samples using single and multi-detector gel permeation chromatography/size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and related techniques (35%)

Evaluates and interprets data with limited supervision (15%)

Maintains detailed laboratory notebooks, and appropriate records (10%)

Plans and executes technical projects, writes technical reports, attends technical meetings (15%)

Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies (15%)

Actively participates in Arkema safety initiatives (10%)



The position interacts predominantly with R&D and Business staff at the KoP site, but will occasionally work with staff from plant locations in North America, as well as with international colleagues. Limited travel (<10%) to training classes and conferences only. In addition to above incumbent will;

-   Support the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements

-   Participate in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Based Safety, SafeStart, etc.)

-   Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents



MS in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry with 3-6 years of experience or BS in Chemistry with 5-8 years of experience

Ability to handle and work with hazardous materials and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment 

General knowledge and hands on experience with size-exclusion chromatography is required

Experience with light scattering and differential viscometry is a plus

Ability to execute experimental plans including but not limited to sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis

Proficiency in basic data analysis and clear technical writing

Proficiency with computer software (spreadsheet, word processing, presentation and graphical analysis)

Experience troubleshooting chromatography instrumentation



Self-motivated and detailed oriented 

Demonstrated ability to multitask effectively and efficiently organize workload in a dynamic working environment. 

Proven track record of solving technical problems and advancing projects using chromatography (multi-detector GPC/SEC is a plus) 

Excellent organizational skills, proficiency in data analysis and clear technical writing

Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

Willingness to learn from Senior Scientists 

Strong written and oral communication skills

Initiative and drive to deliver results with moderate supervision
