This contract position reports to the Project Development Manager with a matrix report to the Pilot Plant Manager.

Job dimensions

The Project Pilot Plant Engineer uses technical knowledge, judgement and engineering skills to develop solutions for pilot plant capital projects. This role performs moderately supervised engineering work and requires routine presence in the pilot operating units and a strong desire to work hands-on in the unit.  The role interacts with a wide variety of support resources including pilot plant engineers, central engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractors. The role also requires the ability to enlist expertise from others inside and outside of Arkema.

Key Activities and responsibilities

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:


    Projects (100%)

  • Conduct basic engineering work and process analysis.
  • Study process alternatives and develop preliminary economics analysis with stage gate checkpoints before proceeding with the design.
  • Prepare PFD’s, P&ID’s, heat and material balances, etc.
  • Prepare equipment lists and equipment specifications
  • Develop project execution plans
  • Prepare estimates
  • Use knowledge of safety regulations and environmental issues, and incorporate them into engineering work.
  • Participate in Hazard Reviews.  Lead capital related Hazop action closure.
  • Interface with construction crews.

  1. Pilot plant reactor
  2. Flammable gas storage upgrade
  3. Micro multi purpose unit
  4. Chiller replacement and piping
  5. Demolition old equipment
  6. Other projects as assigned


    Safety & Environmental

  • Understands and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment.  Has a working knowledge of the process safety management standard.
  • Supports Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and implementation of associated action items. 


Context and environment

  • Position in based in King of Prussia, and requires frequent presence in the pilot plant operating area. 
  • Works with manager to develop priorities and executes assignments with moderate supervision.
  • Works with pilot plant engineers, central engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractors and other personnel to provide engineering support for the design.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • This position requires a minimum 5 years capital project experience.
  • Familiarity with federal health and safety regulations for chemical industry.
  • Familiarity with principles of Process Safety (PHA, LOPA, Safety Instrumented Systems)


Demonstrated Competencies

  • Understands engineering fundamentals and can apply to technology, equipment, unit operations and control technology. 
  • Good problem solving skills and ability to implement process improvement from concept through project completion.
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to convey interpretation of process data
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required
