 Polymer Engineer:  This job supports new product development projects with limited technical service exposure.  The position plans and conducts laboratory studies in conjuction with a senior scientist.  These include polymer lab testing (mechanical & rheological), polymer processing trials, conducts data analysis and drafts reports to support these new product developments.  The incumbent will becom proficient in a broad range of polymer processing techniques, test and analysis.  Multiple technical programs will be managed concurrently so organization skills, communications and team work are essential. 

 

Key Activities/Responsibilities

 

Product Development 

  • For new product or new application development: Execute polymer processing experiments using a variety of different techniques including injection molding, twin-screw extrusion and various other extrusion techniques (tube, pipe, wire). Conduct testing, complete data analysis and prepare reports/presentations to support new developments for key projects, or programs.  Develop new testing capability or equipment capability as needed to support new product and application development.  Coodinate with analytical sciences team to complete testing and summarize results. Present findings to management.

 

Technical Service & Development Support 

  • Set up equipment internally to conduct and trouble shoot polymer processing trials using; injection molding, pipe, tube and film extrusion, etc. Support customer technical service via telephone when needed and conduct customer trials. Produce samples, develop new processes or train customers.  Conduct testing, complete data analysis and prepare report. 

 

Process Expertise and Safety 

  • Become equipment owner and maintain specific polymer processing or testing capability. Develop new melt processing technical expertise and capabilities to support our new developments as requested. Operate all equipment and conduct experiments safely and maintain a clean and orderly work space.

 

Reporting 

  • Provide regular updates of individual projects through monthly reviews/reports, technical reviews, stage-gate reviews.  Reports progress to management versus goals.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Polymer Engineering, Polymer/Material Science, or related field with 0-4 years of industrial experience.
  • Experience and/or training in polymer characterization, testing and processing.
  • Hands-on orientation to conduct experiments and maintain equipment.
  • Prior experience with polymer processing equipment is preferred.
  • Proficiency with PC software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and presentation).
