Lead/Senior Technical Service Engineer, Kynar(R) Coatings R&D Job

Situation in organization

The position reports to the Manager of Kynar® Coatings R&D, with regular input and coaching from other scientists in the group and from the commercial and business development groups. The Technical Service Engineer provides functional guidance on a regular basis to technicians and interns working in the group.

 

Job dimensions

The person in this position will be working with the commercial team, new business development, process technology, and customers on Kynar® resin technology for coatings (primarily water-borne and solvent-borne). Typically, this person will be working on 3-5 application development projects at a time, and will act as technical team leader for these projects.

 

Key Activities and responsibilities

  • Evaluate Kynar® resins in coatings formulations in the context of global technical and sales service support, quality assurance, and competitive intelligence. Identify root causes of complex coating formulation issues and make product, process, or formulation recommendations to resolve these issues. (40%)
  • Lead and manage the Kynar® coatings weathering program (e.g., initiate new series, respond to internal/external data requests, organize panels/fences, etc.) (20%)
  • Interpret and communicate test results to the business, project team members, research management, and customers. (15%)
  • Participate actively as a multifunctional project team member, and provide technical leadership for projects. Direct/oversee technician activities in support of group objectives and enhance coating lab capabilities. (15%)
  • Promote Kynar® resin technology through presentations, publications, and participation at conferences and leading standards development (e.g., ASTM, MPI), in support of business goals. (10%)

 

Context and environment

The position is part of a team that develops new fluoropolymers and fluoropolymer-based formulations for coatings. The candidate will work collaboratively with other technical staff at all levels in a hands-on laboratory research environment. They will report directly to the R&D Manager, but will also interface with higher levels of Arkema R&D management and with international colleagues. There will be travel to customer sites or conferences (~25%). In addition, the candidate will:

  • Support the site HES policy and comply with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participate in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents

 

Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering or related discipline with 2+ years of coatings experience, preferably in coating formulation and application development. Related experience (e.g., formulating/testing adhesives, personal care products, battery) considered.
  • BS degree with 15+ years of experience or MS degree with 10+ years of experience will also be considered.

Demonstrated Competencies

  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments carefully and critically in a dynamic environment.
  • The ability to conduct customer trials, internal trials and analyses with minimal or no supervision.
  • The ability to work and think both in a team environment and as an independent, pro-active researcher.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software, including analysis and charting of data. Experience with Design of Experiments software is a plus.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and recommend/implement improvements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with both internal and external technical/commercial groups.
