This position reports directly to the Manager – Process Safety, in the Corporate Industrial Safety department. This position is geographically based at Arkema’s Corporate Offices in King of Prussia, PA



The Lead Process Safety Engineer acts as a Corporate technical resource and Subject Matter Expert in the promotion and support of compliance with internal and regulatory process safety management requirements at Arkema’s plants in the USA, Mexico, Canada and South America. They actively contribute to the implementation of a comprehensive process safety and risk management program at Arkema.

The Lead Process Safety Engineer independently supports Capital Projects compliance including large cap greater $20MM, leads and coordinates compliance audits as a multiple element champion, and applies CCPSC certified expertise in addition to previous courses.



Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Process safety and risk management (70%)

  • Lead the continuous improvement of the process safety and risk management programs by identifying program opportunities and deficiencies, proposing new initiatives or standards to address them, and coordinating the implementation of such initiatives or standards.
  • Manage multiple large PSM projects of high complexity.
  • Partner with the process risk experts across Arkema to expand technical tools and offerings, and contribute to the development of global policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise in the application and interpretation of loss prevention practices and best practices such as NFPA, PS, RMP.
  • Serve as lead for process related PHA's, compliance audits or other similar compliance related actions.
  • Lead Capital project HES reviews and pre-commissioning safety reviews.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to all facilities by assisting with regulatory and process safety program compliance (audits), coordinating special projects of varying complexity, conducting technical assistance reviews and special in-field assessments.


Technical & Operations (20%)

  • Works with senior engineers, research scientists, and plant personnel to ensure alignment on Process safety issues at the site and Business unit level.
  • Lead the commissioning and start-up activities for larger, more complex projects, with an emphasis on process safety compliance.


Talent Development & Engagement (10%)

  • Identify training opportunities to promote enhanced knowledge in process safety and risk management.
  • Actively seek out opportunities for continued learning & development; apply new knowledge and skill to daily work. Acts as a mentor to other engineers in Process safety and risk management concepts and applications.
  • Interact with other process safety professionals in the industry, e.g CCPS membership and conference participation, to keep current with new techniques and applicable regulations.



The Lead Process Safety Engineer role will interact with other corporate HES personnel, and interface with plant personnel and corporate SMEs on process safety to ensure a balanced and practical understanding of the compliance needs and programs utilized.

The role will also :

  • Support the corporate HES policy and ensure sites comply with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participate in HES activities provided by Arkema Inc. (e.g. SafeStart)
  • Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  •  20-40% travel (including occasional international travel)




  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering required.
  • 8-10 years of progressively responsible chemical engineering experience in Process Safety or directly related field or 7 years of experience with successful completion of Arkema DE program, including 5 years in a chemical manufacturing / process safety environment.
  • Thorough understanding of federal health and safety regulations for chemical industry and experience using knowledge to influence current business initiatives.
  • Thorough understanding of principles of Process Safety (PHA, LOPA, Safety Instrumented Systems) and experience using knowledge to influence current business initiatives.
  • Thorough understanding of management techniques such as root cause analysis (TapRoot, Apollo, Kepner-Tregoe) and Six Sigma experience in applying in process safety environment.
  • Experience applying advanced understanding of process safety and hazards to the management of risk.
