Job Dimensions:

 Oversees all melt processing and testing activities within the Altuglas team. This includes twin screw compounding, film/sheet extrusion, co-extrusion, injection molding and basic physical and mechanical testing to support new product and application development for PMMA products.

Stays up to date on developments in processes, equipment, software, design and statistical data analysis and defines expenditures and implements initiatives in these areas.

Manages material movement necessary for trials

Directly supervises 3-5  full time subordinates.

Schedules and conducts trials, develops process parameters, completes necessary characterization, data analysis and prepares reports/presentations to support new developments for key projects, or programs. Is able to interpret data and articulate results within work group as well as draw conclusions to help steer experimental planning.

Responsible for  1-2 development projects

Interfaces with process development team for product/process scale-up

Gains knowledge of customer applications of PMMA materials to understand material process challenges and align development plans accordingly.

Develops and maintains professional network including counterparts in Arkema, in academia, and with colleagues in professional societies.

 

Key Activities:

Manages R&D  experimental work for PMMA (process and characterization) (60%) 

  1. Operates all process equipment and conduct and/or coordinates experiments safely and with proper precautions involved. Ensures that experiments are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with the team’s priorities.
  2. Ensures processing/testing equipment is maintained in good working order. Has responsibility for operation, training, and maintenance on specific equipment as well as SOP’s.
  3. Manages the expectations and performance (including safety performance) and develops the careers of subordinate personnel using Arkema’s Performance Management process.  This includes managing staffing, including recruiting to fill positions.
  4. Provides concise monthly updates and quarterly overviews on status and impact of key projects and group activities, including safety activities, to the regional PMMA R&D director
  5. Participates in Arkema’s safety programs and leads relevant safety projects as required

 

Manages 1-2 development projects; projects with active customer engagement (20%)

Develops in cooperation with PMMA management team, and based on technical knowledge and understanding of the business strategies within Altuglas, a strategic research and implementation plan for new processing needs and developments.  This includes coordination with other groups or external collaborators as required. (20%)

 

Context and Environment: 

Position is part of the U.S. subsidiary of a large international chemical company. Position holder’s responsibilities are divided among group supervision, technical coordination and strategic planning activities, thus excellent time management skills are needed.  Position holder reports to Director, Altuglas but will  interact directly with scientists in Altuglas, and other BU’s as equipment may be shared. Position holder must understand the long-term strategies and development interests of  the Altuglas business and Altuglas customers  in order to define how process/testing capabilities must evolve to best meet the business needs.  

Travel to customers, trade shows/conferences to learn about process needs, challenges and new technology is expected.

Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements

  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
     
     
    Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering, or related discipline, OR MS or BS degree with equivalent experience.
  • Recognized authoritative resource within area of technical expertise.
  • 5-10 years of industrial polymer processing experience, including direct supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, especially leading others to action through influence, and including experience with conflict mediation and resolution.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with an established track record of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Broad organizational knowledge, including both technical and business understanding.
