The person in this position will work closely with the Kynar® Liquid Applications Research and Development (R&D) team to conduct laboratory research on topics of importance to the business. Projects are targeted to gated research projects and exploratory projects focused on waterborne fluoropolymer coatings and other chemistries. Work priorities and daily supervision will come from the R&D Principal Scientist. Responsibilities also include developing and conducting research plans, interpreting results, and overseeing lab equipment and purchasing.  The person will also interface with higher levels of Arkema R&D management and with international colleagues. There will be minimal travel expected (<5%). 

Responsibilities:

75% Project Support

Set up and conduct laboratory experiments in the area of waterborne fluoropolymer-based coatings and other HPP chemistries. Experiments consist of making formulations and testing them for various properties (e.g., physical/mechanical/weathering). Polymer synthesis is also within the scope of lab support.

10% Documentation
Accurately document all observations and results in electronic laboratory notebook. Organize, analyze, and communicate (via presentations and/or reports) test results and conclusions to the project team members, research management, and (at times) customers.

5% Test Procedures

Follow established test procedures, but recommend/test improvements to these procedures and develop new procedures as needed.

5% SOP and Equipment Support
Develop and maintain safe operating procedures for laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions. Recommend and test improvements to equipment as needed.

5% Other Laboratory Activities

Order laboratory supplies, maintain good housekeeping of labs, and oversee the group’s material handling/waste disposal efforts.

Requirements:

•    1-3 years of experience in liquid formulation, application development, and/or synthesis. (Bachelor’s degree)
•    10+ years (Associates Degree)

•    Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering or related discipline.  
•    Associates Degree in technology field.

•    Strong hands-on laboratory skills.  Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments carefully and critically in a dynamic environment.
•    Proficiency with MS Office software, including analysis and charting of data.  Experience with Design of Experiments software is a plus. 
•    Ability to follow established procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and recommend/implement improvements
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
•    Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with both internal and external technical/commercial groups.
