Acrylic / Polymer - Research Scientist Job

The position reports to the Manager of Fluoropolymers Synthesis R&D, with active regular input and coaching from other scientists in the group. The scientist provides functional guidance on a regular basis to technicians and interns working in the group.


Job dimensions

The person in this position will be working closely with the Battery Applications Team to develop new materials to be used as binders in Lithium Ion Batteries.


Key Activities and responsibilities

  • Develop novel fluoropolymer architectures to be used as binders in Lithium Ion Batteries 
  • Generate ideas for new products/applications in areas consistent with business interests based on knowledge of markets and/or technology and discussions with customers or Business Development and generate intellectual property as appropriate.
  • Interpret and communicate test results to the business, project team members, research management, and customers. 
  • Participate actively as a multifunctional project team member, and provide technical leadership for projects. Direct/oversee technician activities in support of group objectives and enhance coating lab capabilities.


Context and environment

The position is part of a team working on developing new polymer materials for Lithium Ion Batteries. The candidate will work collaboratively with other technical staff at all levels in a hands-on laboratory research environment. He/she will report directly to the R&D Manager, but will also interface with higher levels of Arkema R&D management and with international colleagues. There may be occasional travel to customer sites or conferences (<10%). In addition, the candidate will:

  • Support the site HES policy and comply with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participate in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc(e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Support and promote the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering or related discipline
  • 5-10 years of polymerization experience, particularly emulsion polymerization with an emphasis on fluoro- or acrylic-monomers

Demonstrated Competencies

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and history of innovation (e.g., patents).
  • The ability to work and think both in a team environment and as an independent, pro-active researcher.
  • The ability to conduct internal trials and analyses with minimal or no supervision.
  • Strong hands-on laboratory skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments carefully and critically in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software, including analysis and charting of data. Experience with Design of Experiments software is a plus.
  • Ability to follow established procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and recommend/implement improvements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to present results clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with both internal and external technical/commercial groups.
