Responsible for providing hands-on process improvement support to 3 Organic Peroxide Americas plants: Geneseo USA, Coatza Mexico and Rio Claro, Brazil.  The position requires construction and operation of reactors to conduct chemical synthesis, purification and evaluation of organic peroxides.  Responsible for assembly of formulations, and for conducting chemical and physical tests to assess formulation/reaction  stability and performance. Position interacts closely with manufacturing and process technology personnel, as well as other R&D synthesis/process labs located in Germany and France.  In addition, the position interacts with the commercial and R&D teams in North America.  This position operates within the Geneseo, NY Organic Peroxide manufacturing facility. 

 

  • Generating and monitoring projects to improve plant productivity (including yield or cycle time improvements) during reaction, wash and other unit operations 
  • Reviewing completed batches and available statistics data for potential improvement and necessary corrections.  
  • Carrying out reactions using hazardous chemicals based on SOPs 
  • Running routine analyses, including titrations, GC, HPLC, etc. 
  • Recording, documenting and analyzing experimental data 
  • Configuring and assembling a reactor or other equipment capable of making organic peroxides 
  • Assisting in transfer of new technology to plants 
  • Investigating new chemical synthesis of final or intermediate products in collaboration with the European key synthesis R&D associates 
  • Developing safe operating procedures (SOPs, LHAs,CPs)
  • Evaluating methods for process waste reduction and ensuring raw material qualifications as needed

 

Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience:

  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or related field (or equivalent experience) plus a minimum of 8 years organic synthesis laboratory work experience.
  • Experience in assembling, building and operating laboratory synthesis equipment is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely handle and work with hazardous materials,
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to design and execute experiments within a chemical process development laboratory environment with minimal supervision is critical.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong safety practices and techniques is a plus, as is familiarity with experimental design.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate working within a team environment and to communicate results to internal customers
