Senior Research Chemist Job

This position is specifically that of an experienced applications chemist or materials scientist chemist. This role may be that of an individual contributor, but indirect or direct supervisory responsibilities are certainly possible under appropriate circumstances. This position reports to an R&D Manager or R&D Director and is located in Exton, PA. 


Job Dimensions: 

  • Responsible for independently executing applications and formulation experiments with inputs as needed from supervisor or other local experienced synthetic staff
  • Able to design experimental plans and approaches with minimal or no supervision to progress day-to-day project work.
  • The position’s main activities include formulation, curing, and physical testing of various Sartomer materials.  The focus of this role will be in the area of adhesives chemistry and technology
  • Ability to apply Design of Experiments and other statistical tools to formulation and prototype product development studies.
  • Demonstrated capability to work safely and responsibly in a dynamic laboratory environment.


Key Activities and Responsibilities:

Lab Skills:

  • Interest and willingness to perform hands-on daily formulation, curing, and chemical/physical analysis as detailed below.
  • Knowledgeable in organic and polymer synthesis, polymer physics/materials science, and physical testing methods relevant to adhesives technology.
  • Plans and conducts laboratory studies and supports commercialization of new technologies 
  • Able to independently modify existing procedures based on literature or lab results.  Able to design new experiments and processes based on learnings and prior art/literature.
  • Knowledgeable with hands-on experience in standard lab analyses such as dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile testing, adhesion testing (e.g. peel, crosshatch, lap shear), and film coating & curing (thermal and UV/EB).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to conducting all work activities ethically and lawfully.
  • Functional knowledge of key standards and regulations effecting markets and products
  • Conducts daily work activities with minimal supervision.
  • Is proficient with equipment and processes used in work group, and is able to propose and develop new methodology independently.
  • Knowledgeably utilizes Arkema Analytical and BU evaluation capabilities for material and product analyses.

Data Interpretation and Reporting:

  • Reports and interprets results. Organizes and analyzes data to explain conclusions and outcomes to internal and external customers.
  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. Makes effective presentations to multiple levels within R&D community.
  • Recognizes and anticipates when intellectual property protection is needed.  Understands when to operate under a CDA and handles disclosures appropriately.  Can operate effectively within the bounds of a JDA.
  • Presents activities and results regularly to internal staff and as appropriate to customers or other eternal audiences (conferences, etc.).
  • Ability to search, read, and interpret IP and literature in the field of adhesives technology.  Ability to work with Legal to help construct IP strategies based on their knowledge of new Sartomer chemistry and the IP landscape.

  • Willing to supervise and train less experienced staff as needed.
  • Willing to support other functions such as Quality, Purchasing, Sales, and Manufacturing.
  • May supervise one or two less experienced chemists, in which case this responsibility would pull some % time from Lab Skills to account for that time.


Context and Environment:


  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents
  • Minimal travel required (<10%)


Required Education/Qualifications/Work Experience: 

  • BS degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or other related technical field with 8+ years of relevant industrial experience, or MS Degree with 6+ yrs of related technical experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with adhesive technologies and materials testing.  Specific knowledge of acrylic 2K structural, anaerobic, PSA, and thermally curable adhesives and coatings preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical testing and material characterization and testing techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of chemical lab safety.


Demonstrated Competencies: 

  • Established technical knowledge and hands-on accomplishments in adhesives technology and organic/polymer chemistry.
  • Track record of successful R&D and/or Production support.
  • Established ability to tabulate, interpret and clearly and concisely report results and conclusions.
  • Strong track record of HSE performance and support
  • Strong track record of collaboration and team attitude.
