Business Development Manager – Exton, PA

We seek a Business Development Manager to join our Sartomer business, based in Exton, PA.  This position is a key part of our business and plays an important role in identifying, developing and commercializing new business opportunities within key growth markets.  It balances strong marketing/commercial and technical components, determines/understands the market needs, establishes the value proposition, develops and executes a market / business development plan accordingly.  This role will also align and manage resources in terms of business development opportunities and projects.  This role reports directly to our Business Director. 

Additional overall job dimensions include:

•     Proactively develops and facilitates effective ‘partnerships’ with decision makers and influencers at multiple levels of the value chain.
•     Initiates and maintains customer interactions, including frequent (up to 50%) travels in North America and possibly overseas.
•     Defines, executes and/or requests the right level of technical service to support his activity and proposes new product development projects under Arkema’s stage-gate process and New Product Development (NPD) process.
•     Responsible for alignment of New Business Development (NBD) actions and objectives with Sartomer 5-Year NBD growth plans  


Key Responsibilities and Activities:

Drive and Manage Business development activity (Americas and some Global)

New business development (NBD) activity for Americas will focus on Specialty markets including Personal care, Adhesives and Chemicals for Manufacturing.  Global responsibility includes managing and leading of NBD platform for Advanced Resins for toughening.  To drive and manage business development activity, this role will:

  • Develop/execute development strategies in selected markets of focus which includes :
  • Explore, Identify and develop new market / application opportunities.
  • Drive customer / market development projects until full commercialization
  • Create and quantify market pull to drive new Product Development projects
  • Determine value chain and competitive environment
  • Determine IP landscape and ensure strategic IP differentiation (application patents as appropriate)
  • Define, execute or request the level of technical service required to support the business development activity
  • Propose and participate in new product development projects under NPD process.
  • When relevant: identify, approach and engage Universities, Consulting Consortia and Entrepreneurial free agents for collaborative development
  • Lead / Explore cross BU opportunities in strategic growth markets.
  • Train and Mentor less experienced team members within R&D and Business Development.

Business development, customer and opportunity management

  • Utilize Salesforce customer and opportunity management system to support and report activity (Call reports, samples/tech service requests etc.)
  • Write and report on monthly activity reports
  • Deliver activity summary presentations to peers and upper management (i.e. - Project portfolio reviews, sales meetings)
  • Manages business strategy for the platform developments which includes exchanges with global business and business development teams to share experiences, information on key development of platform

Market facing/ Communication activities

  • Represent business at trade shows and conventions
  • Write articles, generate and present technical and marketing papers, and attend technical and trade conferences
  • Collaborate with business and marketing teams to propose and implement brand strategies as appropriate


  • Position is based at Exton, PA site.
  • Operates as part of a global organization with high degree of global communication and coordination, as developments in one region may ultimately benefit another.
  • Frequent travels (up to 50%) in North America and possibly overseas.
  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents

Required Education/Qualifications/Experience

  • Technical degree (Bachelor’s degree minimum required) – major in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science preferred.  Master’s Degree or PhD a plus. 
  • Minimum of 7 years’ related experience in the chemical, adhesive, and/or UV curing industry, including 1+ years of experience in R&D or Technical Service role with customer engagements.  
  • Experience working/partnering with Marketing, Field Sales and/or Business/Market Development teams.
  • A keen ability to operate effectively within a global, culturally diverse community of professionals is essential.
  • Experience using Salesforce or other CRM/customer opportunity management system is preferred.
