Activities
Analytical Scientist  
Perform complex analyses on multiple projects.  These projects include support of R&D and EHS projects, support of sales and marketing projects, technical support for operations and technical support for customers where specialized testing is involved.  Projects support all business units in multiple geographies.
Development and documentation of analytical testing procedures
Development and execution of instrumentation and capability plans
Development, execution, and documentation of calibration and verification procedures
Acts as a liaison with outside professionals for contract testing.
Attend and occasionally lead team meetings.  
Define individual objectives to align to company vision/goals.
Define, implement, and monitor individual objectives. 
Contribute to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Maintain relationships with internal and external customers.
Provides professional input on selection and purchasing of instrumentation and specialized analyses.
Responsible for maintenance and repair of some equipment
Help manage equipment supplier relationships.
Supports Quality Management System
Provides input on workflow process and documentation for the Analytical Laboratory

 

Context and environment
Analytical Scientist involves completion, in timely fashion, analytical service requests supporting all four GBUs.  Primary support is for Bostik NA and LATAM sites, R&D/TS teams and BU customers. Role also requires ensuring systems and practices are up to date, equipment is kept calibrated and operating and is trained on newest techniques.
Requires expertise in multiple chemistries/product families and multiple business units with independent aggressive business plans.  Involves balancing resources between longer-term research projects and unpredictable / variable immediate technical crises.
Requires ability to communicate with multiple functions/geographies and levels of education/technical expertise.

Support specialized testing capabilities for Bostik Americas, with coordination from other global analytical laboratories.  This includes providing input on what techniques, equipment and resources are needed, acting as a resource in interaction with outside entities, growing a team of professionals and assuring that data is repeatable and technically sound.  
Operates increasingly at sitewide level.
Forms strong working collaborations with colleagues in R&D BU and Corporate teams and Manufacturing / QC groups.
Represents Analytical functional to external customers and other outside contacts.
Supervises, as needed, technician support staff in day-to-day lab operations.
Publishes reports for broad distribution with minimal management review required.
Plans and leads projects.
Presents work team results to audiences including senior Bostik decision-makers.
Is active in professional Analytical organizations.
Receives broad direction concerning projects, including timing and priorities.
Proactively interacts with internal/external customers to achieve commercial objectives.
Assists in the orientation, mentoring and development of junior staff.
Oversees several projects of considerable scope at department level.
Monitors and shares relevant technology in area of expertise

 

Qualifications / experience required

PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer, or Material Science; MS or BS degree plus 5 years relevant experience.
Experience in multiple characterization techniques including rheological, thermal, chromatographic, and spectral techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis. 
Experience with adhesive and sealant chemistries, end uses, and formulations preferred.
Frequently interfaces with multiple levels within Company, and international colleagues. Understands, influences and engages internal and/or external customers and scientific community.
Demonstrated understanding and use of experimental planning tools, data synopsis and interpretation, and basic statistical analysis.
Understands and teaches technical professionals key regulations that impact job responsibilities.
Provides technical and operational guidance to other employees within own business unit.
Demonstrates a commitment to conducting research ethically and lawfully.
Effective team leadership and interpersonal skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to describe results of studies within Bostik global R&D community as well as to business teams and external customers.
