SITUATION IN ORGANIZATION

  • Position reports directly to the Clear Lake Technical Manager and provided technical assistance for Clear Lake Plant.  Position required direct interaction with other departmental managers and staff positions to exchange information and ideas directly related to the success of the plants and the Acrylic business unit.
  • Position has no direct reports not a designated backup in the organization.

 

JOB DIMENSIONS

  • Production Data: Understands and optimizes site systems such as reaction, distillation, incineration, flares, utilities, tank farms, cooling towers, etc. to improve health, safety & environmental compliance, minimize operating cost, improve quality, and maximize yields. Leads other high priority Variable Cost, Repetitive Production Expense or Operational Asset Utilization improvements projects across site.
  • People Data: Responsible for the training of Operations personnel and other staff in technical issues and new projects. Expected to attain Greenbelt Project Leader certification.
  • Financial Data: Responsible for the calculation of and evaluation of potential projects to improve raw material yields our utility usage for the Clear Lake Plant.
  • Process Data: Responsible for the interpretation of process conditions.

 

KEY ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Environmental (10%): Support full environmental compliance and optimal environmental performance. Ensure that permit compliance data and new permit applications are reviewed and are consistent with best engineering practices.
  • Safety Goal (25%): Support full compliance of all Safety & Health related regulatory requirements including: OSHA, PSM, and Company Policies and standards. Ensure that timely response of technical review is completed for incident investigations and action items developed and implemented (Impact). Key member of PHA team for units in his area. Strictly follow the MOC and PUPs. Coach others as needed. Lead by example and meet CLO Leadership Expectations.
  • Operation and Technical Goal (50%): Maximize operational efficiency and product quality by continuously identifying, evaluating, and proposing ideas for improvement in all technical/ technology areas. Support Plant initiatives for new product development, Process Technology Projects, and debottlenecking efforts. Assists Operations during plant turnarounds, emergency operations, and any other time technical assistance is required. Drive OAU goal, through a disciplined reliability program.
  • Professional Development Goal (15%): Develop skills required to support the Clear Lake Plant and Bayport 2EHA Unit through professional development of technical skills, interpersonal relationship skills, management skills, and community relations. Ensure that specific goals are developed that correspond with Plant objectives and initiatives.

 

 

CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT

The position reports directly to the Technical Manager. The individual must develop a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of the Clear Lake Plant and of the business situation as related to the operation of the process. The yearly MI planning and Capital project portfolio planning activities drive work priorities, The individual must be able to communicate on multiple levels of organization and manage multiple tasks required by the Clear Lake Plant.

 

The individual must meet the following requirements:

 

  • Supports the site HES policies and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, Safe Start, etc.).
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident, or injury incidents.
  • Understands and Supports the Clear Lake Facility Acrylic Monomers HSE2Q Commitment.
  • Be able to pass a respirator fit test and wear an SCBA, full face and/or half face respirator.
  • Be able to climb stairs, ladder cages, etc. in order to enter distillation columns for internal inspection.
  • Be able to enter confined spaces.
  • Minimal travel potentially overseas is required.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university, minimum.

Experience:

  • Graduate of the Arkema Developing Engineer Program, or
  • 2 to 3 years of equivalent industrial experience.

Proficiencies:

  • Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Aspen Hi Sys, Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating, etc. or equivalent is a benefit.
  • Process Hazard Analysis training thru Primatech or equivalent is a benefit.

Demonstrates Professional Knowledge by:

  • Has solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to make general application.
  • Can conduct experiments or data collection efficiently and apply statistical methods. Possesses a Six-Sigma Green Belt.
  • Manages a few small projects and programs, along with core responsibilities.
  • Works with Manager to develop priorities.
  • Works effectively with minimum supervision. Committed to Safety thru:
  • Understanding and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment.
  • Participates in Process Hazard Analyses and provides input.
  • Participates in root cause investigations and/or analysis of safety or environmental incidents. Demonstrates Effective

Communication thru:

  • Clear, concise, and timely communications.
  • Maintains thorough, accurate and accessible technical documents and procedures. Supports preparation/modification of process books.
  • Prepares clear, organized, and effective presentations to a technical audience.
  • Provides timely formal and informal project updates.

Demonstrates sound judgment by:

  • Making decisions on personal actions with some supervisor input.
  • Supports stage gate activities.  May lead small gate projects.
  • Applies management techniques such as root cause analysis (Taproot, Apollo, etc.) to problems, projects, investigations, etc.
