Process Control Technician

Situation in organization

Position reports directly to the Clear Lake Technical Manager and provides technical assistance for plant operations.  Position has no direct reports nor a designated backup in the organization.

Job dimensions

Apply plant and process control knowledge and experience to optimize plant operations and maintain process control related operating discipline. Identify deficiencies and value creating opportunities to plant control code and operator interface, leveraging best practices and applying Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques.

Key Activities and responsibilities

Major responsibilities for the Process control technician include but are not limited to the following:

Personal/ Process Safety (20%):

  • Participate in site personal safety initiatives including but not limited to Behavior Based Safety (BBS), SafeStart, etc.
  • Complianceto Clear Lake Plant Leadership Expectations.
  • Support SIS and BPCS interlock functional testing.
  • Support cybersecurity efforts and maintain malware, virus protection, etc. for existing operating systems.
  • Utilize Management of Change (MOC) system for DCS and Safety System changes.
  • Assists in development of plant process safety standards specific to process control technician routine tasks.

Environmental Compliance (15%):

  • Provide Process Control support for Environmental Compliance initiatives including but not limited to; creating DCS / Aspen Process Explorer tags, creating back-up tags, monitoring the MES Historian, etc.
  • Recovering "missing" Environmental Compliance data from the DCS by request.

Operation and Technical Goal (50%):

  • Maintain and update as necessary the Process Control Operating Discipline.
  • Link to Process Control Engineering / Process Information functions to update and implement control technology / process information improvements and capitalize on current best practices to improve HESQ and cost. This includes good alarm management, state based control, and advanced process control to minimize unplanned events (safety/environmental), ensure product quality, and optimize operating cost. Utilize troubleshooting techniques incorporating test equipment to identify the root cause of problem areas in the SIS PLC's and Foxboro I/A systems.
  • Ensure reliable, optimized plant operation by successfully managing and implementing Process Control related  project changes, utilizing approved functional tools and the MOC process.
  • Utilize troubleshooting techniques to identify root cause of problem areas in Process Control code, Operator Interface or hardware and effectively resolve these problems with stakeholders input.
  • Utilize existing or develop Process Control and plant performance indicators to monitor effectiveness  of plant operation and the Process Control system.
  • Perform training and coaching for changes as required and assist in training efforts requested by Plant Operations
  • Coordinate Process Information system maintenance.
  • Work with CFME, Technical Manager and Operations Manager to define appropriate plant/ business rules for on-shift Process Control and process information work.
  • Provide training and coaching for Process Operators and I&E Technicians as needed.

Professional Development (15%):

  • Manage the Foxboro contract training fund to ensure that the site recovers the full value of the contract.
  • Utilize the Foxboro training for personal develop of skills required to support the Clear Lake plant control systems such as the DCS and the Triconex.
  • Identify and request outside training, as necessary, for professional development of technical skills, interpersonal relationship skills and management skills that correspond with Plant objectives and initiatives.

Context and environment:

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents.
  • Understands and Supports the Clear Lake Facility Acrylic Monomers HSE2Q Commitment.
  • Minimal travel required, as necessary to support Factory Acceptance Testing, etc.

Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience:

  • 10 years or more experience with process control hardware.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Experience with Triconex, Allen Bradley, Aadvance and other PLC's and Foxboro I/A DCS systems required.
  • Process control troubleshooting relating to instruments preferred.
  • Basic computer skills (email, MS Office).
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID, Instrument and Electrical loop drawings and ladder logic drawings.
