Position reports directly to the Alsip Plant Manager and is a member of the Alsip Leadership Team.  This role will have leadership responsibility for up to (3) three Maintenance Technicians and (1) one I/E Technician.

In this role the Improvement Leader leads maintenance team for effective equipment reliability, assures plant-level improvements align with Plant Specific Technology Plan, thereby closing local performance gaps and increasing Asset Capability (AC). The Improvement Leader provides plant-level improvement project support, which may include fulfilling roles in the global project execution work process. The Improvement Leader requires both technical knowledge and judgment to identify, analyze, and implement solutions. Must have the ability to appropriately enlist expertise through teams, support groups, and Technology Centers to enhance problem solving.

What you need:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering required
  • 5+ years’ experience in either, or a combination of, latex production, manufacturing plant/process or project engineering environment is preferred
  • Maintenance Experience - preferred
  • Supervisory Experience - preferred
  • Experience with fired boilers or plant utilities preferred
  • Requires planning, focus on data based decision making, objective prioritizing, the ability to work with all functions, and the drive to achieve results
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop goals and action plans to improve performance
  • Highly motivated team player able to work at a fast pace.


What you will do in this role:

50-60% – Maintenance Leadership

  • Direct supervision of Maintenance Team. Works with individuals to develop aligned personal goals within the maintenance department.
  • Creates an environment that fosters team and individual empowerment.  Ensures an effective and sustainable organizational culture exist to support Empowerment.
  • Ensure PMs are up to date and any overdue items are rectified quickly
  • Manages maintenance activities for Alsip site with assistance from Activity Coordinator.
  • Provides experience on failures and repair techniques during root cause investigations.
  • Provides technical expertise to plant personnel on troubleshooting failures, repairs, and evaluating whether equipment design meets its intended or existing service conditions.
  • During repairs, ensure that repair details such as clearances, tolerances, materials of construction, welding procedures, etc are documented and available. Provide technical support as needed.
  • Ensures repair techniques, repair procedures, and equipment specific training are documented and available.
  • Provide technical support for specification, identification and purchasing of needed parts.
  • As appropriate and required, reviews spare parts list for existing equipment and works with MRO to ensure parts are identified and stocked in the MRO system in support of the maintenance strategy.
  • Manages the development of the plant mechanical integrity program
  • Develops maintenance procedures based on Most Effective Technology (MET).
  • Participates in developing the maintenance budget to support the maintenance strategy.
  • Develops plan for turnaround work, provides input on scope of work, and coordinates turnaround activities with contractors and plant resources
  • Willingness and ability to directly assist in equipment or plant infrastructure repairs alone or alongside mechanics


40-50% – Capital Project Planning and Execution

  • Owns and manages the Plant Capital Plan
  • Works with manufacturing teams, engineering personnel, and Recipe Industrialization team to identify, evaluate and implement capital and non-capital improvement projects.
  • Identifies plant improvements that align to the Global, Plant Dashboard, and Improvement Plan objectives.
  • Validates improvement opportunities using global tools
  • Supports plant operations to ensure implementation of Business-supported projects as identified in the Plant Capital Plan.
  • Provides technical leadership for plant in specialized areas, including: process simulation, modeling, risk analysis, and process optimization
  • Provides data to ensure that projects deliver performance objectives after implementation
  • Supports plant operations/bottleneck issues, conduct periodic troubleshooting.
  • Provide leadership on CAPEX projects through AGATE process (includes early stage project evaluation including layout, cost estimates, engineering feasibility, and engineering bid packages) and project management in the execution stage

Context and Environment:

  • May travel <10% domestically and internationally
  • Completes all assigned Impact items
  • Participate in HSEQ activities provided by the site management, Arkema Coating Resins and Arkema, Inc.
  • Comply with the HSEQ Policy.
  • Comply with Regulations, Legal and Internal Requirements as made known by the site and by the business unit (BU).
  • Comply with the rules of the specific location to which one is assigned as well as the rules set by the business unit (BU) and Arkema Inc.
  • Comply with all standard procedures and work instructions, aka SP, SOP, PWI, TM, to ensure productivity, quality assurance and cost effectiveness.
  • Review their work areas for potential losses and Report hazards to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Near Misses to the direct supervisor.
  • Report Incidents or Accidents to the direct supervisor.
  • Identify and communicate potential gains or possible improvements to the management system.
  • Co-Leads and manages components of AIMS elements 4, 5 and 6.
  • Supports all AIMS initiatives
  • Ensures workplace safety by conducting safety observations and reviews while adhering to safety regulations and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.
