Principal Environmental Engineer Job

The Principal Environmental Engineer reports to the AMAS Director of Environmental Compliance. The position will provide environmental compliance support to multifunctional teams of varying competency levels to accomplish complex environmental projects. The position is predominantly a consulting role since each site has ultimate responsibility for environmental compliance. The job holder will occasionally receive guidance from the Vice President, Manufacturing, Engineering and Regulatory Services.
Commensurate with typical office environment when working from home. Otherwise, visiting manufacturing plants requires navigating and walking around various plant environments. Travel required, at least 50%.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
40% Waste and Toller, Terminal and Warehouse Auditing
- Work with Arkema Business Units to oversee and schedule environmental and safety audits of Toller, Terminal and Warehouse facilities utilized by Arkema. Oversight includes coordinating active sites, scheduling audits with the Business Units and maintaining corporate documentation and approval status for each of the Toller, Terminal and Warehouses.
- Serve as Arkema’s corporate RCRA waste expert providing assistance for Arkema with complex RCRA related regulatory issues. Support Arkema facility agency RCRA inspections and any follow-up legal communications. Represent Arkema in regulatory reform proposals including membership with ACC as a subject expert.
- Support Arkema Business Units with special waste projects including temporary or episodic waste events, one-time warehouse cleanouts, determining alternative treatment technologies that reduce the Arkema environmental footprint. Evaluate and manage approved TSDF’s for Arkema waste streams.
30% Manufacturing Support
- Identifies informational requirements necessary to develop company-wide strategies to address sensitive or complex issues.
- Develops innovative permit/compliance strategies for major regulations to minimize financial and operational impact on the Corporation and implements compliance / program initiatives and environmental assessments across business and operating functions.
- Develops unique and in-depth approaches to solving complex issues and provides technical evaluations of pending legislation to lobby efforts.
- Evaluates international environmental initiatives against Corporate environmental strategic plan.
- Engage, train, and motivate facility professionals responsible for carrying out environmental compliance, capital project support, and sustainable development at Arkema facilities.
- Coordinate and oversee Arkema manufacturing facility multi-media environmental audits including communicating, scheduling, preparation of audit teams, regulatory review and preparation, conducting audits, audit reporting, recordkeeping and audit follow-up.
- Lead negotiations with Federal, State, Local agencies and community organizations regarding environmental requirements at Arkema facilities in order to achieve reasonable and justifiable results which are consistent with the corporate strategy. This may need to be accomplished utilizing support from other senior management personnel within Arkema such as the Law, Technology and Public Affairs Departments.
- Establish and implement environmental objectives for Arkema Inc. which align with worldwide Arkema objectives and allow for sustainable growth. Communicate objectives to stakeholders including top management and business groups and report results.
- Represent Arkema Inc. in organizations such as American Chemical Council and other relevant associations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Chemical Engineering or Environmental Engineering (or related) Bachelor’s degree. Master or advanced degree preferred.
- 10 years experience in the environmental engineering field along with a strong familiarity with the chemical manufacturing industry.
- 10 years waste management experience in manufacturing setting, including hazardous waste.
- Advanced auditing skills in manufacturing setting
- Requires comprehensive technical, regulatory and program expertise in all aspects of environmental management associated with complex chemical manufacturing and treatment/control technologies.
- Should be a recognized corporate/industry-wide authority.
- Advanced skills in spreadsheets, illustrating data and utilizing environmental software.
